How about: When the world initially generates, it generates a location for the sea, then every river generated from then on, HAS to flow towards there, or it doesn't generate at all?
It isn't just 1 sea and also, how would that work with islands?
what do you mean how would it work with islands?
I for one do not care about the flow. If you want flow, you could generate river somehow with less "static" water blocks so it flows a little bit, then the terrain goes lower and again few source blocks of water that flow for 8 blocks and so on. Anyway I'm happy even without flow.
Guys unless notch generated the entire INFINITE WORLD at once when you made a map It isn't possible and you can't just pick a random direction What if a water flow is going TOWARDS a waterfall instead of away from it? besides, unless the water is going down a hill or a waterfall, it's going to be completely level the entirety of the river, so it shouldn't even have to move realisticly
I seriously hope we're getting real waterfalls, or at least lakes at different altitudes if not in 1.8, then at some point later in development. One word; Dams. Hhhnnggg
.
I don't think his code generates waterfalls.
It does, just not much of any. They are generally just one source block hanging off the edge of a cliff.
I don't think his code generates waterfalls.
I'm sure he has waterfalls in mind, not that it means it'll be coded, but there's a chance.
I don't care if I'll want a flowing river, I'll make one by myself.
I'm fairly certain that once Notch releases the source code, someone a bit smarter than him will be able to rewrite the terrain generation code to allow for a lot more interesting features.
Unless Minecraft completely stops selling copies, I doubt he would ever release the code.
Notch stated that he'd release the source code as the mod API.
Why does everyone say flowing rivers are impossible? He would need to code a new water block, but if the world generation can determine a start and end point for rivers, it's possible to create flowing rivers, very possible indeed. I'm pretty sure that the rivers won't change much, if at all, in elevation - judging from the screen shots.
There's just one problem; THE WORLD GENERATOR CAN'T DETERMINE THE START AND END POINTS. /c
Well, I was just saying that flowing rivers aren't impossible - it may require a recode of the generation, but it isn't impossible at all. If, for example, a river counts as an in-game biome, it could be easily possible to determine start and end points. If each connected river biome chunk has an ascending number, until it reaches the last chunk, this would allow the generation system to figure out the length of a river, and the starting and end points. EDIT: And before any of you counter-act by saying the current biome system wouldn't allow for chunks shaped that way, or some other limitation, remember that Notch has recoded the entire biome system.
they could either flow north or south, even if they aren't generated yet they could still all flow in one direction.
This is very much possible, though it would require some clever code to determine when the flow should change (for example, at a curve of a river). EDIT 2: I just love how everyone is rating box on my first post about rivers, but ignoring this one because this one actually show how it can be done. I'll probably start being rated dumb for saying that, but really, if you are going to rate this post dumb, explain to me why my other post was so dumb first.
Not really It's not like the path of the rivers are simulated Or simply said:
they could either flow north or south, even if they aren't generated yet they could still all flow in one direction.
they could either flow north or south, even if they aren't generated yet they could still all flow in one direction.
They could but it would probably end up looking unrealistic or doing something stupid somewhere down the line. [editline]30th August 2011[/editline] Like flowing out of an ocean or flowing away from the top of a waterfall
rivers dont flow theyre just elongated bits of water holy shit knock it off
How about rivers stay at sea level and cut canyons into higher terrain to avoid backwards waterfalls. Actually that might have problems.
Why not just have rivers all flow in the same direction. It could work.
Why not quit bitching about thing that won't change.
Speaking of north and south he better fix the north rule.
rivers dont flow theyre just elongated bits of water holy shit knock it off
Yes and no. (I don't care about this feature in the slightest, I'm just clarifying something) Rivers flow downhill so where ever the most water build up is it will flow in the opposite direction. Until however they are equal, then the flow stops. Should the opposite side gain more water than the other the flow will reverse. It's basic physics. Now please stop this, rivers flowing is something that doesn't matter in the slightest. Who the hell cares if the water takes your boat away or if you feel resistance going against the flow. Water is fine the way it is.
Why not just have rivers all flow in the same direction. It could work.
Only if all rivers were straight lines.
If you could ever have a mount in minecraft (not including the pig) it should be the spider.
I'd prefer riding a sheep. Oh god the way it sounds.
Everyone is saying that there's new lighting. Particularly when it looked as if carrying a torch lights the terrain, and the contrast changing when looking from something bright to something dark. All of this is actually the camera adjusting to the brightness of the game, due to it being filmed and not a screencast.

Performance boosted. - Dynamic lighting. Torches give off warm light, the moon gives off cooler light.
But there is new lighting. - Sunlight no longer forces chunk updates. Performance boosted. - Dynamic lighting. Torches give off warm light, the moon gives off cooler light.
True, but he was trying to say that the HDR-ish effects seen in the video were not actually part of the game.
