Probably without the ultra texture pack though. Might wanna add about double that.
Idtech5 is supposed to be optimized to hell.
I mean the Xbox can run it at great framerates, so what does that tell you.
They're running through an abstraction layer on the XBox (ODX) and PS3 (CG) and still getting consistent framerates, so it's pretty obvious they've done their homework... though that said, the lighting looks nowhere as awesome as it used to.
To be honest, carmack is a fucking genius based off all sorts of conferences and interviews I see and read of him. I don't know coding at all. But Hearing him speak for hours about all these different parts of the engine optimized to the atom about how to keep quality and reduce render times is really quite inspiring.
I watched his whole quakecon conference about the RAGE engine and while long, it was rather interesting hearing him talk about all the processes involved and what it took to overcome the limitations of the consoles. He said the goal was 60fps constant with variable quality options I think. Where if the game dropped to 55fps or less or something for a split second the engine diagnoses various aspects of the engine and can modify on the fly to keep 60fps running on the consoles. I think he said on PC's it's similar, but with the option to turn that off for people with high end computers.
I have an Ati Radeon 4870 1GB and I can games on max settings easily, not sure about this though as every other game I run on max has recommended video card of GTX 400/6000 series.

If more people would speak like this, we'd have less dumb people and less accept of being dumb imo. It would improve society.

Carmack is the godfather of FPS games and engines.

He is still a nerd, unlike all other devs who became business men or whatever. He still thinks of games as something cool rather than a product that you can sell. I think lots of people love that, myself included.
