Dawn of War II for fun.
Supreme Commander for epicness.
Not my favorite RTS of all time but try out Anno 1404.
It was released a few months ago, it's mainly a building/economics/quest game.
There is also a demo for it

Any of the cossacks games.
Company of Heroes is my favourite modern RTS game, it's absolutely amazing. The main attraction for me is the fact it's not rock, paper, scissors gameplay, it's all about how you use your units, planning tactics and strategy.
I've had one squad of paratroopers manage to take out entire panzer divisions before because I kept dropping them supplies like mortars and machine guns to take out infantry, upgraded them with anti-tank weapons to make short work of tanks and armour and using the environment to my advantage. To my knowledge, you couldn't do that in any other strategy game.
Men of War, tops Company of Heroes in this aspect by miles. Much more realistic.
Company of Heroes.
Red Alert 2 is fucking badass.
And it's really old so you don't gotta worry about how it'll run.

Giving the scout binoculars and a panzerfaust is utter fun :P
Men of War, tops Company of Heroes in this aspect by miles. Much more realistic.
Soldiers dying from a bee sting is realistic.
Supreme Commander - Forged Alliance
Especially fun with mods that make you not having to worry about resources, and then playing with two friends against a really hard cheating AI. Great fun, really hard too, but fun in the end when you are finally able to nuke the Cheat AI after sending 10 experimental nukes, beating his nuke defense.

I wouldn't really compare them to be honest, both are great games that play very differently.
Supreme Commander is pretty damn epic!
Well, i've been reading through, most of them i have heard of and not liked, or played and not liked.
Haven't heard of starcraft before, may look into that, however, i went with RA3... installing now ;)
Thanks ;)
Personally, I adore Age of Empires II and Supremem Commander
Hearts of Iron 1, 2 or 3.
Europa Universal 1, 2 or 3.
Company of Heroes without a shadow of a doubt is the best RTS I've ever played. Even on its 3 year old engine not many games today can compare with its level of destructive detail.
That or Men of War.
The Total War series (barring Empire which I think was a massive disappointment) is also worth a look if you like absolutely fucking huge battles.
From what I've heard, Sins of a Solar Empire and Supreme Commander are also top-notch games too.
Supreme Commander has got to be, by far, the best RTS. (I haven't played Company of Heroes but I just might.)
Starcraft does not even compete in the amount of strategy you can have in this game.
For one, it has a unit cap, but this unit cap can go from 250, 500, 750 or 1000. Compared to Starcraft which had a max of 200, or Warcraft 3 which had a max which barely managed 100.
I'm sure TA spring also has the same unit cap of 1000, with the same types of units, and some people even said that Supreme Commander stole their ideas from them. What I say to that is "GOOD". Last time I played TA Spring, I had the most confusing and un-fun experience of my life.
The strategy factor is immense as you have 3 areas of combat (Air, Land, Sea) you have to deal with. An army of zealots or ghosts doesn't work here, as you can just get hit by long range artillery or base defenses. Maybe having 20-30 siege bots accompanied by 10 shield drones and 15 AAA just might be able to get through their shields, but then again, this game has a unit cap of 1000 for a reason. Watch in delight as your 400 bombers and 200 fighters flatten your invaders, or a nuke makes a white spot on your map, and dissipate to reveal destroyed buildings and a shaking commander (mind you these are still counterable). Or make an experimental unit that really makes the game difficult for the opponent. (I've managed to kill 2-3 at the same time, it's not impossible, but it does make for quite a challenge and sometimes destroys part of your base.)
As for screenshots, they're not the best because they're so closely zoomed (you can also zoom out from that close to what is basically the minimap) but you can see the types of units and combat that is in this game.

Dawn Of War 1,
DOW 2 is shit compared to the first
TA/SupCom
company of heroes hands down. I mean really, it's just fucking great, and once it loses it's fucking greatness you download a mod and it's fucking great again.
Other than coh, cossacks (thanks for the reminder earlier in this thread).
May I remind you that supreme commander is a spiritual sequal to Total annihilation , so it derives everything from it

And that is why it's awesome.
Overrated gameplay, but the story is fucking epic.
Hm... Try the following: Original War, Homeworld 1 & 2, Age of Empires 1, 2 and 3, Dungeon Keeper 2 (A Sim actually but yeah), Startopia (If you liked DK2), Red Alert 2, C&C Series (Just skip the first part, way too old now), Rise of Legends, Starcraft (Overrated, yes, but worth knowing), Total Annihilation (a must), Warfraft 3 + Expansion, aaand that would be all that i can think of right now.
I also heard the Total War games are great but i never tried them
Wait, you said new? Screw new games, try the classics (Plus you didn't say new in the topic name :V)
Why skip the decent C&Cs? If it's 3d it's shit, at least C&C4's going to finish nailing the coffin of shit shut.
I saw Supreme commander Gold for £7.99 in GAME about a week ago, should I get it?
Men of War, tops Company of Heroes in this aspect by miles. Much more realistic.
Unfortunatly this statement might be correct if the AI wasn't such a god damn piece of fucking shit. Holy fuck.

Only if it came with it's expansion, Forged Alliance. If it didn't come with FA, forget about it. The expansion improves the game quite a lot.

Yes, I think it did. I'll try the demo tonight and see if I like it.

Just to warn you, it's really hard on the cpu, so make sure you have a good one or crank the settings down to low if you want to run it well.

Yeah, my pc is pretty good so I don't think I'll have much trouble running it. Any other info I need to know?
It's slow.

Well, if you can run it, just have fun I guess. Also, get some mods.
