I don't get why everyone bums CoH, sure it's a good game, graphically as well, but I just don't find stalemates fun. That's what EVERY skirmish game I've played results in, unless it's against some guy who's miles better than me

As for SupCom, I find it fun but again it's very stalematey, and it's basically just a rush for the T3 and experimental units. SC 2 should fix this though, they're making units upgradable so they stay usable throughout.
World in Conflict and Tzar: The burden of the crown.

It's not about throwing rushes at eachother or sitting there shooting eachother, you have to incorporate some level of consistent strategy, maneuvering your units in such a fashion that you can pull even a mild advantage to create an opening for a real assault. it's tactics.

I stopped playing SupCom because my matches always followed the same pattern:
Start > fighting > everyone nukes eachother > either the lucky person with an intact T3 factory wins or the whole thing starts over again
I once played the same savegame for 3 days before the match ended. I lost.
Men of War, tops Company of Heroes in this aspect by miles. Much more realistic.
No. That's like comparing ArmA to Halo.
Not to mention Men of War is realistic enough that infantry play a very, very small role. It's just who has the biggest tank in this. Sure, you can beat some other tanks if you're not stupid, but it still comes down to who has the biggest tank and who has the most.
In Company of Heroes, infantry have the ability to take out lots of tanks with their abilities, making it a much more balanced RTS.
The Homeworld games. Great story-lines, especially the first one. And they are some of the few games that bother to be scientifically accurate or at least explain what couldn't happen in reality.
World in Conflict is a good multiplayer strategy game, but it's more akin to a class-based shooter game with its choice of roles (armor gets tanks, support gets artillery and mobile SAMs etc) requiring more teamwork than your average RTS in which where you control everything. What I particularly like is how the terrain plays a big role in line of sight and vision. You can even position units in a large crater to survive a nuclear explosion!
Supreme Commander
I know, I'm late, rate me clocks.
C&C Generals: Zero Hour with ShockWave mod installed. I should probably try SupCom but the fags I play RTSes with have shit computers.
Total War, take your pick based on the performance ability of your machine
Shogun, Medieval, Rome, Medieval 2, Empire
Original C&C (Which is free now) Original Red Alert
You should own atleast two of these games, no excuse
There is no definitive best RTS, nor is there one for any other genre
Rise of Nations, always.
Yeah, my pc is pretty good so I don't think I'll have much trouble running it. Any other info I need to know?
It doesn't mean shit, because no matter how good your PC is, SupCom is EXTREMELY requiring. It has piss poor multi core support and it pretty much likes to hog the CPU
Red Alert 2.
Rise of Nations, always.
I was really starting to worry nobody would post this, thank you for showing me there is still hope for mankind.
Supreme Commander
This game is quite amazing. I suggest getting the Forged Alliance "expansion" (it's otherwise a stand-alone game, just like Dark Crusade, as you don't get all the races unless you have the original game as well)
Here's my list:
Dawn of War: Dark Crusade (Either get the Platinum edition or get Dawn of War, Winter Assault, and Dark Crusade separately. Your choice)
Homeworld 1/2 (some of the mods for these are EPIC)
Medieval 2: Total War (my personal favourite, but Rome: Total War and Empire: Total War are both quite good)
I probably forgot a bunch, heh. Many people like various games from the C&C series, Warcraft 3, Starcraft, but I didn't find these games very entertaining. I also wasn't a big fan of Company of Heroes and Dawn of War 2.
EDIT:
I just read the thread. I'm blown away by how many SupCom supporters there are. I never knew this many people loved the game. Seriously though, the game is really as good as they say. It has a lot of features that make managing a massive army easier, so don't worry, you won't get overwhelmed with practice. Example: you can zoom all the way out to a large map of the game and then zoom back in on where your cursor is, and transports have a "ferry" option, where they will automatically taxi units back and forth to points you set as soon as they get loaded.
Starcraft
Starcraft
Seriously. Starcraft.
You said earlier you never heard of starcraft. Get it now. I have never played a better RTS..... Till warcraft 3 came along... the online community for that is so amazing, They make custom user made maps for it and i still play it today. how ever long past its original release.
Supreme Commander
Rise of Nations, it's like a Civ game except in real time, what's not to love? Tech tree, base building, air/sea/land- you get it all.
Command & Conquer Generals: Zero Hour
i know it's nostalgia, but damn.
I'd go with Warcraft III plus the expansion, the default gameplay is old after a while, but custom maps keep things fresh, and really never run out of ideas, Too bad the patch broke half of them.
Universe at War: Earth Assault was fun, and really diverse, but I'd have to say the best in my opinion is Supreme Commander, despite only having about 30 minutes worth of gameplay with it.
Soldiers dying from a bee sting is realistic.
Yeah man, it's almost as if those bullets are ripping his flesh apart, the building collapsing on top of him crushing his bones and that HE shell to the face vapourising his his body :downs:.

No, not at all. Infantry are by far the most flexible unit type in the game. The amount of times the other team has said "gg" when they pull a Kingtiger or an IS3, only to have it crushed minutes later by a single infantryman, squad or platoon is too many to count. But I see where you're coming from, MoW is different to other RTS games in the sense that it's more down to the skill of the player, not their units.
And that said, in the threads context I would not reccommend it here, I just brought it up because honestly, a single man with a bazooka vs a super heavy tank stands more of a chance in MoW than in CoH.
Age of Empires III
And new? Sins of a Solar Empire.
I like company of heroes more then Men of War, for one reason :
The last campaign missions are nearly IMPOSSIBLE, even on easy. I had to slow time down to able to counter the zerg rush of enemy tanks and infantry. How in the hell do they expect you to hold down so many tanks if even your heavy tanks seem to die in one shot? It's so fucking tedious.
Age of Empires games, with II probably being the one i played the most.
I love Men of War. You can control each singular soldier down to whether or not he's prone, crouching or standing, jogging or running, aiming or not. You can control tanks, troops and artillery, manually aiming their shots for them as you would in a third person shooter, which gives so much more control when you need it.

The whole inventory system means that you can raid destroyed or abandoned vehicles and give the supplies to your men. More than once a single squad with one man carrying dynamite has won a game for me.
Age of Mythology. Closely followed by Company of Heroes and Dawn of War.
I used to play Age of Mythology for like seven hours a day. I loved the custom map aspect, just like in Warcraft III, however I suppose I preferred AoM because I've always had an interest in mythology and epic tales such as the Iliad.
