Depends on the server, some servers make you respawn at the beggining/last checkpoint, others make you respawn where you died, that's just it for death penalties, this game is about having fun after all so there's even a server option for infinite ammo.

Also alot of people and servers have been popping up in SS1 probably because of SSHD, give it a try.
