I made some industrial-grade pieces for the editor. Then I got bored.
This game had potential. It's sad it didn't get the further attention it needed.
If only hats were added...
They had the parasite for TF2
If only hats were added...
Well, to be fair, it has parasite hats. Of course, the marines don't like them very much, but still... :v:
I still don't understand why this game was kinda left by the dev team. I mean sure, you have community made things. But it doesn't explain why it was left as is. I liked it. :frown:
Lets see why AS is dying ghiacciato. Firstly, we're straddled with the VPK system. This means we need an external site to host our map in the first place. This not only costs money, but requires support. In the case of modifications to the Alien Swarm source code, we not only need a site, but a forum, and all players would need the same compile to play the same game, and the more code mods you make, the more you split the community and the harder it becomes to keep track of everything. Secondly, Alien Swarm has a problem with repetative gameplay. Unlike Left 4 Dead 2 the director in AS does not measure your stress level and spawn hordes relating to it, it spawns them based on the amount of time you're taking and executing pre-determined spawns rather than spawning as it sees fit. This causes any campaign to frequently become overly predictible. This can be resolved by adding a better director and more varied gameplay. These are the two main reasons. And while it is "up to us" as a community to fix it, Valve shoved us up shit creek with a poor paddle and a terrible game base to work from.
People still play this game?
People still play this game?
Correct.
The main problem is that it had one campaign.
It's still a good game, I've played custom campaigns with friends, hope they'll add something in summer.

Started playing this again. Finished the whole campaign in 47 minutes :o
Started playing this again. Finished the whole campaign in 47 minutes :o
You can get it down to at least 30. I think someone did it in something like 22 minutes with a team.
I might have to play this again some time, it was kind of fun when everyone was co-operating
One thing I disliked in this game was friendly fire. There were too many friendly fire accidents in this game. But I too have to get around to playing it again.
On a scale of 1 to batman's parents how dead is the game ?
On a scale of 1 to batman's parents how dead is the game ?
I don't know where to put it but pretty damn dead, considering there's not many custom campaigns for it and it only has one campaign by default.
Happy Birthday Alien Swarm! It is a shame that Valve let you die.
Happy Birthday Alien Swarm! It is a shame that Valve let you die.
Or so we think.
Dem grockets.
I can not figure out why, I wonder if it had something to do with the top down restricted view versus the first person. Its a shame that swarm could not be something more, considering you would think anyone would grab a free game, but now that TF2 is free to play, that may have taken a broad range of the free loading players. I don't get what killed the swarm this amount of time, considering HL2 DM is not exactly dead yet. I have to wonder about the crew that made this game, and their reputation with Valve. I guess the good thing was that for the community, you did not pay for Swarm, where as Day of Defeat still has a price tag on it.
I don't get what killed the swarm this amount of time
Only one campaign combined with the sorry ass excuse for custom map support in the form of the VPK add-on system.
Only one campaign combined with the sorry ass excuse for custom map support in the form of the VPK add-on system.
AS isn't designed to be a full-fledged game. It's more of a tech demo, hence why they released the full source code for it.
Here's an awesome collection of maps that just got released: http://swarmarmory.com/maps?action=view&id=398-Spring+2011+map+pack I'm going to play the City 17 one in an hour if anyone wants to join in. [editline]22nd July 2011[/editline] If you want just the City 17 VPK, here it is: http://www.jeepbarnett.com/temp/city17_as.vpk
We're only playing with you if you give us all of the info on the Portal 2 DLC. Just kidding. If I wasn't still low level in the game I would play it, and if it wasn't so late.
Oh man, those maps were awesome! Props to whoever put that together. Alien Swarm is only dead if you're not playing it, so get that map pack and enjoy! :D
That broken link for City 17 is just what I needed. Can you fix the link?
Oh man, those maps were awesome! Props to whoever put that together. Alien Swarm is only dead if you're not playing it, so get that map pack and enjoy! :D
I think it would be a good idea for Valve to feature some of the good mappacks as a news post. A mini-revival.
