I think it would be a good idea for Valve to feature some of the good mappacks as a news post. A mini-revival.
Alien Swarm could use some revival, but it's still pretty good for a completely free game. If they start updating it, they might add hats or something :v:
That broken link for City 17 is just what I needed. Can you fix the link?
Right click and "save as" should work.

They released the entire games source code, including the engine and gameplay for the purposes of people building their own games from it. Like a bunch of people have now made that one with full thirdperson 3d combat and deathmatch.
THREAD REVIVAL TIME Somebody's been keeping me up to check with their Counter-Strike mod. It's using the Alien Swarm engine if you're not jaw-dropping right now.

This thread is for Alien Swarm, not for unrelated mods built off it's source code.
Me and a friend made this almost exactly a year ago, It was meant to be a campaign but we just stopped working on it and haven't done anything with it since. You land on a ship, go to the power station, powers on, aliens wake up. At least that kinda was the idea. (Source recorder made it weird and twitchy in a couple of places)
That looks pretty fun, mind uploading a .vpk?

Anything to make this underrated game have another chance at life, instead of being "that game I tried out for that hat." I actually wouldn't mind if Valve went and added hats now, if only to give the game another chance at actually being played and enjoyed by people, like they were able to do with TF2.
Stop calling it a game. Alien Swarm was part of the deal to recruit the Alien Swarm 2K4 team to Valve. The source was released to it and it is effectively a technical demonstration for the purposes of encouraging modders. The game is unlikely to receive further updates and any modification to it isn't "Alien Swarm" it's "Alien Swarm Mod X" if you want to further Alien Swarm learn to map for it.
Stop calling it a game.
are you kidding me
Stop calling it a game.

The game is unlikely
:downs:
I think I'm not getting the joke. v:v:v EDIT: Seriously, can someone explain? What's so jaw-dropping about that?
There is no joke. What's jaw dropping? It's ridiculously hard to convert the current Alien Swarm code into a hardcoded FPS. The shit you put in the console to change the viewstyle of the current Alien Swarm to first person is nothing compared to this. It's harder than just changing a few console variables. To get viewmodels to work as well, you'll need to remove all the marine code, which means you need to modify the gamerules and a whole ton of other shit. It looks like someone ported the L4D maps to be useable in CS, and modified the HUD. Rate me dumb, but can someone explain what the fuck they did?

Since Alien Swarm engine is technically a derivative of the Left 4 Dead engine (some how in the mix), the Left 4 Dead map can be loaded. What the crackerjacks, man?
Since Alien Swarm engine is technically a derivative of the Left 4 Dead engine (some how in the mix), the Left 4 Dead map can be loaded. What the crackerjacks, man?
Er. Alien Swarm is on the Left 4 Dead engine codebase. But it is not a derivative.
Guys, basically he's saying that they managed to make Alien Swarm a FPS, which is hard.
Now run one of the Alien Swarm maps in FPS mode.
Now run one of the Alien Swarm maps in FPS mode.
Vanilla Alien Swarm maps don't work well in first-person because they lack ceilings.
Look, Ripvayne found the "dumb" rating.
Look, Ripvayne found the "dumb" rating.
Who cares? OH NO, SOMEONE THINKS I'M DUMB, CALL THE FBI!
Vanilla Alien Swarm maps don't work well in first-person because they lack ceilings.
I assumed they'd probably need work to be put in First-Person due to the view perspective.
I assumed they'd probably need work to be put in First-Person due to the view perspective.
There's a buggy way of making first person work using console commands but it doesn't work well, hence the guy making Counter Strike in Alien Swarm's engine being impressive.

Keep on them! Those look great. I'm pretty sure they would go down a storm with sci-fi roleplays too.
Nice work! Very good attention to detail. The railgun needs a tracer though.
My only complaint are the animations, like the rifles are both using what appears to be the animation of the Scout from CSS, though I'm sure he'll fix it before release.
