If you make it close to the howl, there will be even more drama from people claiming you're ruining the land. You really have to avoid living close to the starting zone, unless you want to be in a perpetual squabble with people over who owns what. Ideally, you make your desert somewhere in the middle of a forest, not too close to anyone. So you have no whiny neighbors, and when people find out about it, it's already too big to remove. Wurm Politics is like a game all by itself.
