I miss them for some games.
But really, I don't mind good achievements. You know, like killing the final boss with a squirt gun, or doing all of the obscure/hidden sidequests to fight a megaboss. Those are fun. However, most achievements these days are 'Beat the game on medium', or if you are super edgy 'Beat the game on hard'. It's disappointing because it shouldn't be about the achievements, it should be about the deed. Gamerscore is a terrible thing because it promotes these terrible achievements.
Agreed. Achievements you gain by normally playing don't feel like achievements at all. Good achievements encourage you to try alternate solutions or impose a challenge on yourself, and can both increase replay value and the overall fun with the experience.
Sadly that takes extra brainpower and due to the industry growth a lot passionate idealists have been replaced by suits. It's not all terribad now and it wasn't all superawesome then, but the tons of money that can be made with videogames nowadays more than ever attracts certain people nobody likes.

complete game on easy - 523gs
I feel that cheats where only good when most games was hard to play, remember the days when it took min a week to complete instead of 3 - 6 hours to finish a game. That justifed cheats as they become usefull as a break away from the actual game and go screw about, then return to the main game.
Most games are soo dumbed down now you dont need cheats to assist you in completing or getting a moment away from the game. The only satisfaction you can really get with most games is achievements to say either wow I kicked ass and actually did something most other people wouldn't have done, or I have been sad enough to actually play this game for soo long I killed x amount of enemies.
JC2 has trainers for all versions. Plus there hasn't been a JC2 update in more than 6 months.
None that I seem to get to work, the one before the patch worked but the framerate was horrible, the latest patch doesn't even do anything, PM with link?
Up x 3, X, Square three times to fly in THPS2
There aren't cheat codes in any games anymore :( I miss the days of fat cheatbooks and looking up your favorite game
It's a shame we have lost the fun cheats like big heads, super X and every Y is Z. GTA: VC, SA and 4 (barely) had some of the best cheats of their generation. The hours of fun pedestrians riot and pedestrians have weapons. Until my younger brother saved while they were on. Holy shit all my rage.
i found a few bits of paper the other day that had all the GTA:SA cheats on. i remember printing it off and just causing mayhem everyday after school heh
i still remember "IAMTHELAW" - way back from GTA 1

These were the most important cheats of my childhood back there, whne I played my first games on PC. (I had some ultra old console, dunno what resolution was there, something like 64x64... ).
IDDQD
IDKFA
Never heard of DNKROZZ :S ??? What does it do (yes, Im lazy one to not google it out).
But yes, PSX cheat codes... MAAAAAAAAN, I had whole notebook of them. Back in time, only way to get them was by playing the game or getting them from other people, no internetz like today.
Good old times, better than nowaday's...
I cheated the hell out of Duke Nukem: Time to Kill.
Though, I grew up from cheats like 12 or 13 years ago, when I was 10.
(P.S.
Doom cheats worked also in Heretic series, though it was the opposite effect.
IDDQD - Instead of giving you the invicibility, it kills you.
IDKFA - stripped you out of all your weapons instead giving you all avaible weapons in the game :) ).
Up Up, Down Down, Left Right, Left Right B A Start.
Has been in so many damn games.
I mean just fucking look at this:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Konami_code_games
I raged when deus ex 3 didn't have cheats, but the steam trainer saved my life.
Of course, seeing as it's steam related, kind of think I would try and play the game normally.
But the third boss pissed me off.

Google them. There are plenty out there.

It used to work on the TF2 wiki. :v:
I remember when cheats meant you weren't cheating, you were having fun.
Just thought I'd throw this out there:

In case anyone didn't know. I miss controller button combo codes.

I just find that cheats ruin a game, it takes away difficulty of an game.
But that's just me.

Pedestrians riot and pedestrian weapons makes GTA easier? Come back when you've been ripped from your car in a chase mission by some crazy old woman with a chainsaw.
Old school cheats like that, that don't particularly help you in game, but are fun to use are great. Even the health cheats were good if you just wanted to fuck about. If you need to use cheats to play the story seriously, lower the god damn difficulty or give up. Everyone should do one play through of a game without cheats or mods.
cheats and demos, where'd you guys go?
BAWK BAWK BOOM
If I am remembering correctly, haven't some games had what would have basically been button push cheats as pay per use DLC? I could swear reading that the 360 version of The Godfather was like this, but the PS2 and Gamecube versions had button push cheats.
Another thing is that most games now a days are kind of short. With the assumed mindset of of the "average" player, cheats could be used to make a short game even shorter.
EDIT: X Square Square Triangle Up Down(XSSTUD) for 13 in all stats(I think its normally supposed to be 9 max) in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater
idkfa damn straight
L4D is extremely fun to cheat in, unfortunately it also brings thousand ways to make people crash :v:
Seriously, I made a 'building' autoexec, where you could build containers and fences n shit, really cool to do in finale maps.
Well guys, while you argue I'm gonna go play a generic modern game and beat it in 15 minutes and then use cheats to play it again when I'm done - oh wait.
Generic? Because every game that comes out nowadays is COD, right? Goddamn you are pissing me off so much by being that dumb. You should know that Steam has thousands of fresh and original games.
Google them. There are plenty out there.
none of them work
I hope this doesn't turn into another thread filled to the brim with groundless generalizations about how all modern games are shit.
Plus, everyone's acting like Achievements are a bad thing. They aren't. They give you something to try to do after completing the game and they make you feel like you accomplished something.
I would prefer an ingame item/character/etc. instead. :v:
Cheat codes were (usually) only there in the first place for developers to test their games. Remember those level select screens? Those were so the developer didn't have to play through the whole game to test the second to last level. The same thing for the warp pipes in mario. Invincibility was there to make sure enemies and bosses worked correctly, without the developers having to run the risk of starting the level over just to test the final boss. Remember the debug mode in the old sonic games? Those were so the developers could test items without actually having to find them.
Cheats aren't needed anymore. They can just create empty maps and place items/NPCs/obstacles then run it on their computers without having to compile the entire game and run it on the console.
They could do that before. Believe it or not most games still have cheats in the game that are coded out afterword.
Space marine, Red orchestra 2, Dead island, and New vegas all had cheats build into the game code for developers but where coed or patched out later.
They question is why not just give us a Dev console :(
