I could look past the glaring flaws of all the other modes because I didn't care about them if the space stage was done right - it should have been (and I was under the impression that it would be) a space-based 4x/exploration god sim. The focus should have been on exploration, warfare, resources, and diplomacy. Not FUCKING pirates attacking every thirty seconds, manually collecting one resource, and flying around with a fleet of identical ships that don't do anything.
Why did you even have to mention Spore. That's just throwing rocks at a hornet's nest for me.
Creature stage was best stage.
The whole game wasn't just that great, end of story for me.
The DRM being a huge dick also didn't help, because I only could see my own creatures and those default ones everywhere.
Creature stage was best stage.
Yes, it was.
I still enjoyed the creature creation and space and getting to the center of the universe etc. It wasn't every thing I hoped and dreamed, but hey it was still pretty fun. Give it some credit.
It's a cool game despite of the disappointment.
Itt: We bitch and moan
i'd really like a refined space stage because i really enjoy the casual 4X aspect(if i want to manage fleets, a million research trees, and such, i'll play sins or star ruler or something), but there's still a lot i'd like to see that can't be done with mods(removing pirates and stuff makes it way better, though)
-Definitely the ability to design city layouts to be deployed automatically. That part gets tedious.
-A research system would be better than badges for most things. Perhaps the ability to designate a planet to do research instead of produce spice
-Better combat. I ended up just dismissing allied ships because I would accidentally hit them and piss them off.
-An online metagame would be really cool. Not really sure how it would work out, but I feel like so much more could be done with the online features of spore than just sharing creations
i could list way more but it's been a while since i played and i'm tired, but all in all i really love the concept of a never ending casual space 4X game, and i really enjoyed the spore space game once i got some mods.

and i don't know why anyone was surprised by the art style. Maxis isn't especially known for dark, gritty graphics.

Spore was fun to dick around with, once you'd hit the core of the galaxy. I used to love just building random ships and shit. In fact, I think it's time for me to dig up my old disc.
Reinstalled the other day, and im currently right at the start of the space stage, but i remember how long that drags out for...
Sad really, the stage i enjoy the most is the cell stage and its the most basic. If there were like, 4 times the parts for cells and the phase lasted longer id be so happy :'(
No offense, but we lacked a Spore thread for a reason. The game itself felt rushed and incomplete, and there really isn't much to talk about except how the game left a lot to be desired. Oh, and making dicks in the creature creator.
LIKE THIS EXACT STATEMENT HASN'T BEEN REWORDED AND POSTED OVER A BILLION TIMES

It was fun once I 'beat' it once, but I felt no reason to start over, i'd just place the space mode and blow everything up.
After I beat it I played the civ stage again a few times. If they had actually had a huge array of functionally unique parts, multiple designs for each type possible, more units available, harder AI, etc., it would have been worth being a game in itself to me.

I actually wouldn't mind if it had fleets, even if they're just a better version of the allied attacks.
I remember how motherfucking excited I was before it came out. I researched news on the game every day 6 months prior to the release. I could never stop thinking about it. When it came out, I was even more excited, and when I bought and played it I wasn't surprised nor disappointed. I actually thought it was a lot of fun at first and I couldn't stop playing. But I knew that it lacked what was promised. The game had essentially been an awesome chemistry set before release, and was turned into a coloring book.

Also, guys, heres the prototypes if you are interested: http://www.spore.com/comm/prototypes
GonzagoGL has Spore 2005 models.
I might play it if I got it on Steam someday.
I remember the time I beat Civilization part by destroying one of the other cities and all the other colors allied with me so I wouldn't kill them.

I think it's time for the price to drop some more.

And why not update those extras into DLCs since you can do that now, EA.
Holy fuck, it's $70 for everything?
Hahaha, get fucked EA.
might do a reinstall, it wasn't the best but i'm having some nostalgia about exploring space now. Sure the space stage wasn't great, and the game was really simplified, but I liked that you could visit so many different stars and planets and find other civilizations and stuff, It was simple but kind of cool in itself.
Also there was a really nice Bigger Planets mod that made the Civilization stage HUGE amounts of fun, because planets were like 4 times bigger it was extremely difficult to actually just straight up win and all that. Tribal stage was damn near impossible with it though, tribes would attack you while you were half way across the continent attacking another tribe...
edit: this mod looks amazing, mostly http://www.sporemodding.com/index.php?topic=11.0

I wouldn't call Spore rushed and incomplete. As a whole it had just as much if not more content than the average game, the problem is each stage should have been treated as if it were it's own game.
There's nothing wrong with Spore, it is just a flawed design, one which could have been corrected with the right designers, but instead we got Will Wright and Chris Hecker.
Designing a game about Evolution would be extremely easy, what worries me the most is that a good design might never see the light of day for fear that the design would flop because it is similar to Spore.
Everytime I think about Spore, a little piece of my heart dies.
i still hope that one day will wright releases his original vision of spore as a fan service.
This game was fucking shitty. The videos prior to release were incredible.
I'm so fucking glad I never bought it...

I have no idea why you're blaming Will Wright for SPORE's flop, considering he envisioned SPORE as it was in 2005/06.

No need to knock Will Wright, as he was the one who wanted it to be the evolution simulator we all did. Hecker is the one who pushed and forced the game to be the cartoony, unrealistic version it is.
SPORE was great
I enjoyed it when everyone was yapping about how shit it was. This game taught me not to jump on bandwagons and have my own opinion about stuff.

Will even turned Maxis in a whole battlefield because realism > cute.
Hecker responded with gaining followers, and made the game cute.
Will left after Spore, he could not take his shit anymore.
This will not last an entire thread so no reason to add versions. :v:

I think we're all quite aware of this.
