Not exactly terrifying, but in half life 2, think about the bodies you find. Throughout city 17, there are multiple burnt corpses. You never really see any examples of the combine committing genocide, but you do see the mess left afterwards. At point along the coast road, you come across a house, back wall blasted in, a few combine inside, and out front, a bonfire with a dismembered corpse...what happened before you got there?

This was such an awesome game. I didn't find it that scary except for the level with the scarecrows. If I can remember, if you went into the field of corn then a load of hidden things would run towards you and quickly kill you.

It gets worse if you know that [sp]the Reapers were dissolving humans into Tang to create the Human Reaper[/sp], and if they end up succeeding in destroying humanity there'll be a fuckload more of those things accompaying the Reaper Fleet. I pity whatever races have to face off against those fiendish-looking Reapermen in 50 millennia...
To me old school graphics characters are more creepier sometimes rather than the new detailed ones(alone in the dark 1 for example)
There is something about blurry textures and low poly counts that increases creepiness.
