He may be badass and all that, but Scorpion was one of the antagonists in the first game due to trying to seek revenge on Sub-Zero having killed his family (although it was a set-up; Quan Chi was the one who really did it, but put the blame on Sub-Zero and manipulated Scorpion to attack him). Although he tries to redeem himself, and with the way the story is being rebooted/redone, he has a chance of being a hero from the start now.
Technically Liu Kang's the series' main hero character (the canonical victor over Shang Tsung and Shao Kahn), however.
