I don't see how it couldn't. They're setting it up exactly the same way as they did with MK4. Shinnok conspires and plots to launch an invasion of all the realms after Shao Khan is defeated. I mean, unless Shinnok gets his shit rocked at the very beginning, it's going to follow the same basic plot at least.

I know, but Ed Boon said [sp]that it wouldn't follow the plot of MK4, and I'm saying it kind of has to, to a degree. It's set up in almost an identical way, and Shinnok appears to have the same exact scheme set up, so it's probably going to follow the basic plot of MK4. Shinnok invades the realms, good guys try to stop him.[/sp]

I hope not. Nitara was one of my least favorite characters.
I think they'll most likely bring back the old cast rather than creating an entirely new cast, since the old cast has always been fan favorites and that many of newer characters were hated.

The characters have already been resurrected, they're just under Quan Chi's control. Like I said, this same exact situation has happened before in Deception. Onaga let the Deadly Alliance kill the main cast and then brought then back as his slaves. Ermac then proceeded to beat up everyone and break the mind control. I can see the exact same thing happening here, to be honest.
Just FYI the grand finals of the MK9 tournament at EVO 2011 (the world's biggest fighting game tournament) are nearly on stream at the moment. There's some great character variety, go watch it!!

The first two matches of the MK finals were both interesting and entertaining to watch to say the least.
Grand Finals were alright the low hats spam of PL kind of killed the entertainment but hey I'd do anything as well to win.
On a side note i learned some Cyrax moves, more precise the first part of the 100% combo before the reset.
I am impressed by PerfectLegend, but I could probably beat him with Sub-Zero or almost any character for that matter. Considering he seemed to have no variation between combos, so really he was kinda bad he just got lucky.
