I'm pretty sure a mod is being used for that elevator. The panels on the back allow the player to be in the same block, but also allow themselves to be pushed by pistons.
It's the only way I can figure out how to do that.

Well I could make a large 5x5 screen with my ROM allowing for complex animations and pixel art, but I built it in a really inconvenient place where there is no space so I can't do that without infrining on my incredibly useful railway station I use for going between bases.

Couldn't you just run the redstone that would go to the screen underground and over to the other side of the station?
What the hell, I'm trying to make the most basic piston thing and it won't even work (minimal redstone knowledge). I want a two sticky pistons on top of each other to go up and down by a lever and push/pull a block on top of the topmost piston. I have a repeater for a delay on the bottom one and the top is instantly powered by the lever and it's not working. I don't know what to do because redstone doesn't seem to want to work how I understand it to

I can't, because I would need to make my ROM bigger, and the ROM is horizontally next to the station.

No, I was wrong, I just did a test and the hatches worked. Thanks, now I can finish my elevator. I'll post a how-to when I do.

Well if you just pause the video I'm sure you could easily work it out.
However, you just have the water 1 block above where you want the cobblestone generated, and a hole under it, then just put the lava in at the same level as the cobblestone on the other side.
I believe this to be the best set-up as it will only make the "hiss" sound when it successfully creates cobblestone. If you have the water running into the lava, it'll hiss each time the piston moves back, even if it doesn't actually make any cobblestone.
Mine just turns the lava into obsidian.

I turned my old stationary spiral hallway into a spinning spiral hallway.
Did that as a way to learn me some Redstone circuitry.
