There's a few ways.
I made an image to show them since that question pops up a lot.

In the torch example, circuit on = pistons closed. Also the torch can be anywhere next to the piston for the torch one, you could have it behind it or above it and it would work.
edit: since I already have a post here may as well cross post from the chat thread
Just finished my mob trap, it gets 61860 items / hour! (it uses pistons)

The entire cube in minecraft would be awesome.
it reminds me of the Vogon Homeworld (/constructor fleet) from hitchhiker's guide

Someone should make that, except the rooms will randomly be open or closed instead of moving around.

I wish I was friends with you guys.
Not exactly.
Look at the diagrams I made again. The entire set of stairs rises up at once, and, look at the way the floor in the diagram is supposed to retract into the wall.
Better yet, read my entire post again. I know it's a lot, so make sure you understand everything about it.
I don't know if there's a mod out there that could make it easier to do what needs to happen (In problem 1), but I have looked and so far, have come up with nothing...
ACTUALLY
That video solved my second problem of how to invert everything, so I have that
BUT Problem one, which is the main reason I went here for help, is still left unanswered.
What's with
THE
random huge text
?

I have no idea actually... I do it randomly for some reason :pwn:
But really, I would love if I could get some help with the problem i'm having with the pistons right now.
[editline]16th July 2011[/editline]
Okay so bit of an update on the problems I had mentioned earlier...
I figured out how to properly invert everything, so when the stairs lower, the floor extends and vice versa.
However, I still haven't figured out how to get the pistons to properly retract. I know they have to lose power from front to back in order for the pistons to pull each other back properly, but that's just it...
The repeaters would have to be completely reversed some how before losing power, and that's something I don't know how to do... I tried making an entire circuit above the existing one where the repeaters are reversed, thinking that some how powering
the pistons in reverse order would work when the circuit that extends the pistons is off. Obviously, it didn't work like that.
So now i'm back to square one...
If anyone could give me any ideas on how I could do this without completely changing the design of everything, feel free to tell me...
The only way to do that is to have a clock setup so that each pistons (1 by 1) re-extends then grabs the piston ahead of it to bring it back in. It's like a Caterpillar effect.
You can have a sort of clock with redstone on the ticks, and this does the order you need. The problem is if it's with more than two pistons

Problem with redstone is that you can make some cool stuff but it's really impractical because it requires a massive open space to do it right.

Someone should put this into a adventure map. Have a diamond block sitting there, but you have to go through an iron door to get to it. Then when you step on the plate or whatever, the diamond gets swapped by TNT and gets triggered.

pretty good idea but the block would have to be in the ground unless there is something he hasn't shown us

Add in the function to withdraw as well as stick another block in?

could you post a video of the problem?

or screenshots would do
What recording software would you guys recommend if I ever wanted to make a video?
I haven't worked with that kinda stuff all too much.

[sp]h2'd it because people on here are blind[/sp]
Do you just want a sequence to go forwards when you switch a lever one way and then go in the opposite direction when you turn it off?
IE when you switch lever on Piston 1 turns on, then piston 2, but when you turn it off piston 2 turns off and then piston 1 turns off?
If so I'll make you a diagram for how you make it.
Here are basic piston machines that can push a block 2 blocks away and then retract.

My first youtube video of Minecraft... and it's roughly 10 seconds long :v:

It's nothing fancy really, I just wanted to show the idea.
I reckon a lot of people could have use for it with secret entrances on adventure maps or things like that.

Nice idea. it could be a little more hidden (The wiring inside) but otherwise cool
Nice idea. it could be a little more hidden (The wiring inside) but otherwise cool
I left the wiring on the inside visible on purpose, so it would be easier to understand how the mechanism worked.
If you look closely, you can see that there's still room in-front of the wiring to place down the covering wall :v:
Honestly, hiding the wires of a reasonably complex piston contraption is just as hard, if not harder, than building it.
I typically find it extremely easy to hide the redstone, but fail to grasp how to actually wire it up, it has to be fairly simple, most gates and relays are fine but none of this elevator shit...
I made my secret cave entrance more fabulous :D
