Ill do it for him.
The machine allows you to switch between two blocks.
Here are some screenshots which should allow you to build it easily

(repeaters not in the 1 position are in the 3 position)
That is one fucking terrible texture pack.
I started to freak out with pistons, i made a bridge with lava underneath that opens and closes via pistons and i made a trap that releases lava round the perimeter of my house via pistons.
Hey guys, can you reccomend a trap that will kill someone but leave their items intact. This is a trap meant for people, so it has to be quick at killing them, before they can react and get themselves out of it.
That was my design, but it was slow as shit so I abandoned the dispensers and just plopped a lava pool down there. Unfortunately I don't get the items but the kill is oh so glorious. Also, this was my first functional redstone contraption.
In retrospect, the slow stupidity of my actor makes it look like a James Bond villain trap.
You'll also notice there was a bit of lag on the server mid arrow-shot. The dispensers run on a 4/5 clock with a NOT gate so they go off asynchronously. Without lag they appear much faster.
Yet floating dirt/stone/wood/etc. blocks make perfect sense in the real world?
Well no, they don't. I'm not implying that Minecraft is realistic and makes perfect sense, I'm implying that Minecraft has some elements of realism and sense.
The reason these blocks don't fall down is because they're stable, the reason sand and gravel falls falls down is because they're made of an unstable material. In the same way that sand placed in an hour glass will fall down the small hole in the middle, while dirt placed in an hour glass will not fall down the small hole because it is much more compact.

Although I'm against Notch/Jeb adding the launching mechanic to Pistons, I would however not be opposed to them adding a new separate "jump pad" object that could work similarly. Although I still think the launching of gravel/sand looks stupid as hell.
I made a door combination lock with pistons.

The glass is there so you can't place a torch infront of it so it just opens. This is more meant for server where you can't destroy other peoples blocks.

In the background you can see a "useless machine".
Woops! I was wrong about my piston clock statement. Anyways, here's a 1 piston clock working in any direction:

oh, it's also perfectly stable.
It's also perfectly useless, there is no output. Nothing is alternating on / off so it has no use.
And I just tried getting it stuck, it gets stuck just like the normal 1 piston clock.
Also it takes up more room than a 2 piston clock.
I just made a 1 piston clock which works in any direction, is smaller and has an output, making a gif now.
edit - here we are.

But as with all 1 piston clocks it still has the block getting stuck bug, so I'd always say use a 2 or 4 piston clock.
To fix the getting stuck bug just put the repeater at 2 instead of 1.

Or you could just use a 2 piston clock and be able to use a delay of 1 without worrying about it breaking.
But yeah that does work.
Has anyone ever made an elevator based on sand? I tried making one, but once it reaches the top, the piston keeps going and sand blocks magically dissapear :pwn:

But that is still in effect a delay of 2 ticks, as you have to wait for the other pistons output to cycle too. I think.

I timed the output with note blocks to see how many times it goes on/off per second, and the 2 piston clock has a delay of 3 ticks, the 1 piston clock with the repeater set to 2 has a delay of 5 ticks.

You can use the side of the hole which has nothing next to it as an output if you place some redstone there.

Yes but the design makes no sense, it is massively space inefficient and one side of the circuit doesn't even do anything. There is power coming from the redstone torch, out of the hole and into the piston, but also back all the way around, through a repeater and back past the redstone torch which powered it in the first place, which does absolutely nothing. If you remove the side of the circuit with the repeater it has no effect on the circuit at all, it makes absolutely no sense as a design so there's no point in using it.

Yeah, I wasn't disagreeing that it is a bad design, I was just pointing out that it does have an output.
Nobody has anything to say about my awesome door lock. :frown:

Woah I never thought of doing that before, pretty awesome.
It gave me an idea for an and gate, so much simpler than the wierd thing they have on MC wiki (http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Tutorials/Piston_circuits#AND_Gate)

That's cool and useful.
Does anybody know a way to hide a switch?

the wiring or the switch itself?
Is there a way to make a button work like a switch? (Toggling on/off?)
Is there a way to make a button work like a switch? (Toggling on/off?)
With considerable effort, yes.

Not worth it IMO.

There is a much simpler way than that, i'll post it in a minute

There you go.

Each time you press the button the pistons switch which side the block covers.

It's just that wiring an AND gate up to the input could make a different kind of latch.
Another good thing about it is that you can attach multiple buttons and they all work to open and close it.
