I don't know how to exactly answer the OP here. I absolutely HATE the whole fucking elitism or being a women over communities. To specify, "I'm a girrrrrl gamer... *Receives admin within the first week.* You can't tell me this doesn't happen. Because it does.
Is it weird that I have porn buffering in the other tab while reading this thread?
As long as they don't go "And yes I am a girl gamer, so don't hit on me XDXDXD", then I have no problem.
I mean I don't go around going "Yes I am guy and I game" to everyone I play games with.
It's not so much verbal abuse as it is a person's fascination to seeing a girl playing a video game. If a girl is spotted on a server, then the guys usually make a big deal out of it and hit on her and all that jazz.
Me, I'm fine with female players. Nothing wrong with them playing video games and I don't get why it's such a big deal for some players. They're people to you know.
My girlfriend always played L4D2 with my friends and me. It was awesome.

Who the fuck hits on girls over the internet? No really. I doubt, "everybody" hits on a single woman.

Generally doesn't happen. A lot people claim it does, and that's caused by a persecution complex.
(Also, nice avatar. Removes any shred of credibility you had, you goddamn hypocrite.)
Now this is something that gets on my nerves a lot. The amount of sexism you find on online games.
It's not like every TV show/Movie/Game character is either some insanely ripped or handsome man with perfect hair/abs, is incredibly talented in [insert subject here], who also manages to get all the ladies to fall to his feet, right?
Sexism is dumb in general. There's plenty against males, the only difference is that males don't give as much a fuck as females do. When a girl comes onto a game I really don't care. It's just another team-mate/enemy that I have to play with/compete against.
I know one girl who plays video games, she plays well and she doesn't go out of her way to make sure everyone in the game knows it. She usually stays in party chat anyways.
But every girl I've met in a random game has been one of the those GAMUR GURLZ who think their special because they know how to suck at a game. I mean really, why should I give a shit? Just play the game, your gender doesn't mean shit you attention whore.

what does that have to do with sexism?
what does that have to do with sexism?
One major criticism modern feminists have with media is that all males are suppoedly depicted as the aryan superhero.
Which is utter crap.
The girls that flaunt it piss everyone off.
l "Yeah, I'm a GIRL, playing CALL OF DUTY. You heard that. I PLAY VIDEO GAMES."
I don't want to generalize, but I've seen a lot of "girl gamers" and a lot of the ones I've seen feel the need to talk on the mic and remind us that they are in fact a female playing games that are probably more geared towards males. Maybe this is just my experience but I generally just mute them and if a game has no mute option I'll just leave. If it's someone actually contributing and helping the team then I see no issue and I'm not sure why they would receive verbal abuse if they're being helpful, but there's a lot of cases I've seen where they're basically asking for it. Again that doesn't apply to all of them, and there's a lot of annoying male gamers as well, just voicing my opinion based on my experiences. I may very well just be in the wrong place at the wrong time in some games.
well you wouldn't know they're a girl if they didn't go on the mic would you
i dont think you would care to notice them saying they're a girl in text chat
Whenever I'm in a server with a girl in it, people just seem to flock to her and and suck her dick. I usually just say hi and and continue on with the game but that's almost impossible since everybody is too busy slapping their monkey.
However it's only fair to be an asshole to girl if you're an asshole to everybody else.
I've experienced on TF2 a lot of really sad attempts to flirt with the girl, and often times it was just a boy who was maybe 10-12 but either was playing along or had some gender issues. The real harassment came from other guys sick of the dude laughing on his mic at everything the 'girl' said and just sitting in spawn talking with the 'girl' who either sat in spawn too or at least actually played the game.
Also all of my female gamer friends absolutely advertise their sex on every game I see them on, and even band together and have girl talk in-game.
It's the same case with furries and bronies and stoners, we don't give a shit stop telling us about it and play the game.
Wait a minute.
What? Doesn't everybody know a girl like that?

Exactly, when it happens they just want the attention, it could easily be avoided by not whoring attention and just playing the game.
I don't mind girls at all but really I only play with people I know in real life, so if I'm playing with a girl, 9 out of 9 times, I know her already, and if she pulls the "IM A GURL LOL" thing I tell her to cut the shit or just mock her. Anyone I play with and don't know IRL gets the receiving end of a troll sesh of some sort.
Sexism is boring. Piss everyone off, there's more tears to be had if you make everyone cry and not the rare player here and there.
What? Doesn't everybody know a girl like that?
Yeah like this one time me and 7 of my mates changed our name to the first 7 names we found on babynames.org or whatever it was, then matched it with an adjective of the same starting letter. i.e. Brilliant Brianna, Super Sarah, Mega Martha, etc...
and we all typed in chat and pretended we were girls with myspace emos as our steam avatars, until finally we began screaming "I'M A GAMER GIIIIIIIIRL!" over and over again over the mic as loud as we could manage.
Instant server nuke. Or were you not talking about that?
I never see this extreme sexism people are always talking about. Whenever a girl gets on a TF2 game I'm playing, like 5 guys will start fawning all over her, playing pocket medic for her (or being pocket medic'd by her), asking her about her day, and so on and so on.
It's even worse in online RPGs. Even if you play a female character without explicitly saying you are actually female, people are way more likely to help you out, protect you, give you free items, etc.
I mean, this is technically sexism, but not in the way people here are discussing.
because bitches aint shit
I think it's more the intersection of the greater internet fuckward theory with sexism than anything. Assholes on online games are going to be assholes, but as soon as someone reveals that they are female, they pounce on that to use as ammunition.
For example, if on an online game, and an asshole suspects that his opponent is younger or less skilled than him, he calls him things like 'faggot'.
If he thinks that his opponent is better than him: same as above
If he thinks his opponent is cheating: same as above
If he thinks his teammate is not pulling their weight: same as above
If he thinks his opponent is actually a homosexual: same as above
If he thinks his opponent is a female? Bitch, cunt, whore, slut
I'm a chick and I have a mic, but I don't use it for these reasons.
I used to play team fortress 2 with a friend who happened to be a chick and I never saw anyone abuse her. In fact all these nerds were just constantly offering free gifts and shit on a weekly basis it was fucking creepy. Makes me want to change my name to something more feminine so I can score free loot too.
Another great example is when I used to play with this css clan, I commented that one of their clan admins didn't actually own css and hadn't logged on in 6 months. In fact I'd never seen this guy before in my life, seemed reasonable to ditch them to me.
Got greeted with, "dude you fucking sexist she's a girl!"
Huh.
One major criticism modern feminists have with media is that all males are suppoedly depicted as the aryan superhero.

"suppoedly"
i'm guessing you don't know shit about modern feminists considering they criticize portrayals of less-feminine men along with stereotypes of male homosexuals.
but yeah maybe you read that in the shit you just made up
I ignore them.
And if they annoy me, I tell him to politely fuck off.
Very simple, applies to males as well.
Don't care if you're male and female, if you annoy me, you annoy me.
If they openly go out as "Look at me! I'm a girl gamer," I try to target them more to piss them off.
Then again, I do that to anyone who's annoying on the mic.
In my time of gaming, I have only directly interacted with 2* girls. I know I've come across more, but only those two have I considered friends, and not just another player. One sort of fell of the radar, so no clue what happened with her, and the other gets on my TS server from time to time to play Minecraft with us.
I treat women like I do every other person online. I give 0 fucks, and forget about them.
[SUB]*loser101[/SUB]
Arkantos your hardcore teach me to more like you are.
Simplest answer, most male gamers are nerds who have no real idea of social interaction or ettiquette and are thus confounded when met with a female of the species who also happens to game.
Also because they think it's cool.
A little bit of this, a little bit of that.
In short, both sides are at fault.
C'est la vie
