It's also worth pointing out that their newest programmer Andrew Spiering was a software engineer at Blizzard and worked on games like Starcraft 2.
It's also worth pointing out that their newest programmer Andrew Spiering was a software engineer at Blizzard and worked on games like Starcraft 2.
Why did he leave? in my head it goes something like "FUCK YOUR SHIT ACTIV$HIT! IMMA GO CHILL WITH PEOPLE WHO MAKE GAMES FOR THE SAKE OF GAMES!"
Why did he leave?
I don't know the details, but UWE posted a funny blog post sometime ago which showed a 11-year old e-mail they got from Andrew back in the day, where he expressed his fascination towards NS1. So yeah, I guess in 11 years not much has changed and he still sees the amazing potential in this game.
This thread finally convinced me to get this game.
This thread finally convinced me to get this game.
I'm really starting to enjoy it, but the lag issues need to be fixed and then the game needs to be balanced (the aliens called Fades are pretty OPed right now, I think it could be because marines don't have a counter). It would be hard to balance the game when Marine shots aren't landing due to lag (and thus the only thing that does hit are the spammed melee attacks of aliens). So I'd say your money was well spent. Hopefully on release there will be more players and servers

The devs read all feedback and the next build will again be much better. Fades are kind of OP right now, but in a way, it's kind of a good thing because it instills fear in marines and encourages them to stick together more when there's a Fade in the game. Also, when Marines will get exo suits, jetpacks and miniguns, it will be a totally different ball game.
If I had the money, I'd get this. I heard the Spark engine is superior to the Source engine as well.
Spark is no-where NEAR as optimized as Source, but can look 20x better if used correctly. [editline]14th June 2011[/editline] But yeah, I will be buying.
Spark is no-where NEAR as optimized as Source, but can look 20x better if used correctly. [editline]14th June 2011[/editline] But yeah, I will be buying.
It is no-where NEAR finished either. Unlike Source.
It is no-where NEAR finished either. Unlike Source.
Hahaha, do you expect Spark to be as optimized as Source? If you were getting defensive, don't be, for there has yet to be an engine more efficient than Source.
Hahaha, do you expect Spark to be as optimized as Source? If you were getting defensive, don't be, for there has yet to be an engine more efficient than Source.
Suffice to say that Spark is showing much promise. At any rate, it's kind of silly to compare it to a juggernaut like Source at this point in time.
I bought it. It's okay. I like the atmosphere. I know it's in beta, but there better be a lot more content and players! Fun so far.
Hahaha, do you expect Spark to be as optimized as Source? If you were getting defensive, don't be, for there has yet to be an engine more efficient than Source.
No I am not. I am just saying that the game is in Beta stages and the engine is far from finished. They have barely begun optimizing it as far as I know. Besides, it can handle lighting that the Source engine can only dream of, among other things. It is far from easy to program. Let alone make an entire engine.
I bought it. It's okay. I like the atmosphere. I know it's in beta, but there better be a lot more content and players! Fun so far.
There will be. The tech tree on both sides is nowhere near complete.
Hahaha, do you expect Spark to be as optimized as Source?
I bought it. It's okay. I like the atmosphere. I know it's in beta, but there better be a lot more content and players! I think it's a lot less irritating to optimize the performance once every feature is included, otherwise you have to optimize something, add a feature and optimize it again. I don't know though, the only thing I've developed is a headache from complaining testers.
There's always alot of Aussies that play so im in the clear :) Kinda sucks though when you get rushed by 6-7 fades that tear up the place.
Might want to add this link to the first post OP :) http://www.play4dead.com/ns2/ For all you stalkers out there, it also has a link to the current available servers and their playercount [edit] And of course the development progress tracker http://www.unknownworlds.com/ns2/progress
So is this worth picking up now, or should I wait till it's a little further along?
So is this worth picking up now, or should I wait till it's a little further along?
I'd wait. I'd say at points it's still not entirely playable. Plus there still aren't that many servers (and those that are up and populated can have high ping). Check out NS2HD though. His videos are great and they might help you decided if you want to buy it. http://www.youtube.com/user/NaturalSelection2HD [editline]14th June 2011[/editline] Also are those mobile cannons killing hydras from behind walls a glitch?
So is this worth picking up now, or should I wait till it's a little further along?
If you want to help and support the development then I think you should definitely pick it up now, but if you're just in for the gaming then it's better to wait until it's done. [editline]15th June 2011[/editline] I don't think there are any extras for the people who pre-purchase now anyway, the special edition isn't available anymore [editline]15th June 2011[/editline]
I'd wait.
So is this worth picking up now, or should I wait till it's a little further along?
It is worth it. The problems people are experiencing aren't quite as severe as they make them sound. The game is very much playable and there's no other experience like it. Also, consider the fact of how small the development team is. Every extra 35$ they can get is a huge help in the development.
Also are those mobile cannons killing hydras from behind walls a glitch?
ARC Cannon is a sonic weapon, so it can fire through solid matter.
Might want to add this link to the first post OP :)
Thanks alot for the help Kouji! I'll have them added to the links section.
Gotta just say that the blink in NS2 is amazing

ARC's are pretty fragile though so it shouldn't be too hard to focus them down unless the whole team is guarding it
Also I think Gorges should be able to get res in other ways since they aren't a very good combat unit. Oh and they should bring back the old infestation (but I'm guessing that it would cause even more lag! hooray!) [editline]14th June 2011[/editline] Ninjas, also I've seen a 4 ARC convoy before, marines love spamming shit

[editline]14th June 2011[/editline] Ninjas, also I've seen a 4 ARC convoy before, marines love spamming shit
Back in Ns1 marines would spawn like 4-7 siege turrets (like arcs but unmovable) to attack a hive.
Suffice to say that Spark is showing much promise. At any rate, it's kind of silly to compare it to a juggernaut like Source at this point in time.
This. [editline]14th June 2011[/editline]
No I am not. I am just saying that the game is in Beta stages and the engine is far from finished. They have barely begun optimizing it as far as I know. Besides, it can handle lighting that the Source engine can only dream of, among other things. It is far from easy to program. Let alone make an entire engine.
Source is an engine for optimization, not for looks, so yes it does have much better lighting. The whole "dream of" thing is a little over the top, for a good programmer can easily put that stuff in any engine given the right amount of time. The "far from easy to program" bit, that is preference, for I know many people (friends of mine) who consider Source the easiest engine they have dealt with, but I for one have a hard time getting over some of Source's fault. I'm not trying to bash Spark at all, it's a good engine, but you're blatantly attacking Source with half-assed reasons. Now can we get back on topic: The editor is quite easy to use for me so far, but there's a few bugs nagging at me every time I try to edit the geometry. [editline]14th June 2011[/editline] So far I like the editor more than the actual game, haha.
Well, pre-ordered it and got into the beta. I enjoyed NS1 and NS2 is looking good, so I'm happy to support the devs however I can.
This looks orgasmic.
So is there kind of a "prime time" to play? Tried an hour or two ago and I saw 2 full servers with good, green pings, then a bunch of empty servers. I'm guessing everyone plays a lot earlier in the day? I'm US West coast.
