I'm never masochist enough to play these games long enough to actually enjoy them.
I'm never masochist enough to play these games long enough to actually enjoy them.
You don't need to be a masochist, you just need to be patient and analytical. Like all truly great roguelikes, NetHack isn't unfairly difficult, just demanding. A smart player can reliably beat it with little issue, as long as he understands the game's nuances. The catch is that there are a TON of nuances to learn, but that's half the fun. Every time you play, even if you die on, like, the third floor or something, you've probably learned a new enemy weakness, item ability, game mechanic, etc.
I began a Valkyrie save not long ago and since then I've gotten further than I ever have. I'm currently in Medusa's lair and I'm currently learning the strange arts of not only water traversal but those of inventory management as well. I mostly relied on my Ring of Levitation to get me through the level, and I fought thousands of gremlins along the way. I didn't quite expect the final fight with Medusa herself to be so easy though, but I can say I'm grateful that I had not only an Amulet of Life Saving but a towel as well!
Out of all the roguelikes that I've played, Nethack is the only one that I couldn't get into for some odd reason. I played ADoM, Stone Soup, IVAN, Zangband and pretty much every other popular and some less-popular roguelikes you can think of and got around them, but not Nethack.

You died in Gehennom on dungeon level 27 with 250607 points, and 11785 pieces of gold, after 15940 moves. You were level 13 with a maximum of 150 hit points when you died. --More-- Oh well, never gotten to Gehennom before, so I guess I should look at the bright side. So much I've learned, too! It was a fun ride with a lot of difficulties, but it ended in yet another stupid death: A vampire lord, stone giant, and ettin all gang-banged me while I was passed out from the lack of food.
I got a Valkyrie to level 5, that's the best I've done so far
Is there anyway to get buttons for some of the actions in this game, like in stone soup? I feel like I remember there being some before.
I'm stuck in one of my files, and I don't want to just give up while i'm doing so good. Basically, I got done with Sokoban and went back into the gnomish mines. I went down and down the mines until I hit a level in the mines that's designed like a perfect maze, and the entire thing is no magic mapping. I've explored the entire bottom floor and I cannot find an exit. So I ascended all the way back up to realize that the top floor of the gnomish mines doesn't have an up staircase. Basically, i'm permanently stuck in the Gnomish mines. I've explored every floor and checked under every item. I can't find the exit. What do?:v:
