what about if there was a server side mod that made it so everyone had a key that could open their chests and doors and the only way to acquire someone else's key and their loot was to actively kill them? you couldnt loose your stuff if you weren't logged on this way

That way, the enemy can guess the code, rather than having to find a key.

Be a griefer yourself >:D
Best thing is to be a nomad.

There's a mod you can get for bukkit that will block most x-rays, I use it for my server, here's a link to the plugin http://forums.bukkit.org/threads/sec-orebfuscator-1-1-3-anti-x-ray-1550.38385/ As far as I know it works pretty well, with the only side effects being sometimes your normal users see crazy ores while the chunks are loading. There's not much you can do about texture packs though
there is always a chance griefers will find your house, build very very far away from spawn and its less likely to be found
Or just ban them
I disguise my base. Like, I plant loads of saplings to make a small forest, gather logs and leaves to make a tight little cluster of 'trees' in the middle, and make it hollow so it's my home. They just think it's a forest, especially if the house is a few blocks above their heads and hidden with leaves.
Fancy graphics.
not if you hide your shit inbetween clusters of log.
not if you hide your shit inbetween clusters of log.
What if they're actually griefers and just burn the forest down?
Make your base a solid obsidian cube at the very top of the map in mid-air, with a giant pit below it. At the center of the cube, put a single empty chest. Do this a hundred times to keep them guessing. Keep all your valuables on your person anyway.
That happened to me. I got x-rayed recently on my favorite pvp anarchy server. Luckily I had all my 29 diamonds on me at this time, I just got all my everything else taken. Actually, the raider was kinda nice to me because he took all my sugarcane but 1 stalk. I knew I had more outside my underground base by some water but he took that too...
I personally go to the most densely populated city I can find, then locate a target house (usually a stronghold or barracks of some sort. The kind of building likely to have walls thicker than four blocks in one or more areas). Then, I locate a fountain or river. I make a water channel down from the base of it, which I have lead into a pitch dark maze. All the wrong paths lead to cactus/drowning traps. Have the tunnel go under your target place, and then have a ladder up inside the wall. Hide your chests in the walls awhile before the opening in the wall, they expect that you'll hide them there.
