Here's quick tip that took me first 20 matches or so to learn. (Kaiser was my first champion that I bought)
You can cast Creeping Death on other stuff too.
i.e. you get zoned (no idea how though if you enter mob waves and use W + E to keep shield up) you can still get last hits while being pretty far away by casting Creeping Death on melee minion.

It makes you pretty much glass, but you heal up to full with 3-4 hits and Q hurts. As in really hurts. As in kills anything that isn't in a bunker.

That was my first game as Kassadin. I will never play him again.
I did actually get first blood on the enemy Kassadin in mid. However, our durp mode Warwick died three times which was enough to give him an advantage over me (He had a Mejai's). Eventually bottom fed and I just started dying everywhere. It was not enjoyable. At all. :(
I do admit that I'm a bad Kassadin though.
Ugh can't find a good team in normal games if my life depends on it.
Ashe with ghost and heal, tank morde (omg noob he is tank!!!), etc.
Noct's early advantage goes away once the enemy team each has 5 kills :downs:
