Enemy Analysis.
There are champions that can go all for damage and not really care (Le Blanc ?), because that's pretty much all they provide.
Majority of champions though will benefit from staying alive longer than enemies. Armor allows you to take less damage from "Physical" damage and Magic Resistance does the same with "Magic" damage.
Unless enemy team is all True Damage (ignores resistances) buying at least 1 item with Armor or Magic greatly improves survivability, thus allowing longer lifespan and more damage deal.

I guess that Crit Damage works if you lane with Trynd ? Jungle is likely to hurt, so lane till people get bored with zoning and farm like there is no tommorow.
