So I just got into this game after all my friends suggested it and I have no idea what the fuck is going on. I understand the objectives and how to control my character and what not but I have no idea what anything does. Should I just keep playing and figure it out (it seems like there is never time to read what does what) or should I read guides or watch gameplay videos?

Do both. It takes a bit of getting used to, but once you understand the characters and items it's really not that much to it. Like any game you play, you have to play it a while before understanding the ins and outs of it.
