Last patch added that, I believe.
I think it's mostly because people were switching regions a lot anyways if they had friends, and Riot knows it's easier if they only need 1 program instead of 2.

God, everything in this thread makes me want to say something like "Well in HoN, blahblahsomethingsomething." Especially in regards to support characters mentioned above. I'll do it in regards to support since it's not inflammatory.
Support in LoL [I]does[/I] need money. Not a lot, but they need it because of how scaling works. If they don't get some kind of AP they'll fall behind really hard in how they heal or shield or whatever. Unless they're a fucking wizard and stack a Soulstealer and never die. In HoN, you really don't need items as a support and if you do they're cheap as fuck, but you should be warding anyway. It works that way because scaling stops at a certain point as a caster, but that doesn't mean you lower in effectiveness as the game goes on if you don't get any items because, unless your a carry, you damage isn't getting higher.
I just find it a little interesting how it can get so out of control in LoL. There is no cap or diminishing returns for anything but defense stats, and even those can be effectively ignored with the right items.
Supports don't need money unless they lane with a tank(lol) because everyone else needs it more.
Philostone, HoG and assists is all you need. You're here to babysit carries not to take money from them
I learned that from watching High ELO streams (HSGG, Dyrus, Wickd, Elementz, ShuShei etc)

The thing about support and minion kills is that when you see an obvious low minion, and you know the laning partner isnt going to take it, dont fucking let it go to waste, last hit it.
I did this once, and oh my did they rage, the carry wasnt even present in the lane.
You at least need some items as a support so you don't die instantly...

Stonewall's guide kind of sucks. You don't get E until lvl4, so 5-6 minutes in.

Armor yellows
mres/level blues
arpen quints
Take Q or W and go either:
Blue - Wolves - Wraiths - Red - Golem if you're not scared of being counterjungled
Wolves - Wraiths (smite) - Golems with Vamp scepter or cloth + 5 pots
skill order: w (or q) - q (or w) - e - e - q ... prioritize e>q>w and r whenever you can.
And stonewall's is fine since level 4 in standard clear is around 4 minutes and you're not gonna gank until 5 mins or so, but if you feel good, you can gank level 2 with E Q (ONLY IF YOU ARE 100% sure you will get kill)
