Amumu is probably the only really viable hard-tank.

Tanky DPS has replaced hard tanks, since they pack just as much CC, just as much initiation, but more damage. They are slightly squishier, but it's worth it.

9-0-21 standard caster masteries
armor pen reds (ideally flat AD if you have them), flat armor yellows, blues/quints are up to you

I like getting 2 ranks of W early as opposed to maxing Q first because it gives the largest burst damage in your early combo, and the missed 2 seconds on Q doesn't make a massive difference at that point. Jax's biggest weakness is his laning, just about any ranged hero will seriously screw you up; your partner should be a strong laner/support/harasser (Soraka, Zilean, etc.) to compensate for your weakness. I wouldn't recommend solo top until you've played a lot (and never solo top against a 2v1)

early game you should play very defensively, Jax is extremely weak until levels 3-4. farm if you can (early Phio Stone helps a lot), otherwise focus on soaking up XP. his combo at 3-5 can hurt a lot, however with Q's 10-second plus CD at that point improper usage can make you a free kill. especially with the nerf to his base damages, his early-game burst is down by a lot so play carefully

midgame you can start doing stuff, once you have Cutlass you can actually gank pretty decently. otherwise farm farm farm, [I]and always carry 2+ wards[/I]. warding the river bushes next to the sidelanes gives you plenty of opportunity to see incoming ganks, and in some cases you can Q to them to juke your enemies. your 2nd ward is for quick escapes over walls, drop the ward then Q over the wall to it. personally I don't like Wriggles on Jax, although I can see why people would like it and it's certainly an option if you're having a crappy game. time your ult's passive, if you are playing aggressively and ganking with Cutlass make sure you have 2 taps so you can crunch when it matters.

lategame is Jax's forte, he is probably the last "supercarry" in the game after the Trynd and Kayle reworks. fully built, Jax can get over 1000 HP from his passive alone; factor in the bonus MR from his ult, his Dodges (which heavily negate AD carry output), and Gunblade vamp and he's nigh unkillable. with his massive survivability, burst, DPS, and mobility, no-one can rival Jax past 40 minutes

there is only one situation where you should use W before Q'ing, and that is when you are 100% sure it is needed to kill them (towerdiving a low HP champ for instance). in all other cases you should Q, autoattack, then W to reset your autoattack timer. keep a constant eye on minion wave movements so you have an escape if needed

Yeah the game takes a while to get used to. Once you are familiar with it, it becomes really fun.

But once you play the game to get to a point where you are proficient, you will hate the game because bad teammates will ruin it for you.
