I just went into .3 space to pick up some torpedoes for my launcher, and I saw a battle going on and decided to watch. Seconds later, my Caracal was destroyed along with my pod. Along with it, 20,000,000,000 ISK.
Not that hard to warp away... or dock up. Or warp away in your pod considering it's near insta-warp.

I happened to be carrying all my combat shit down there which totaled to 20,000,000. I added 3 extra 000's oops.

first of all
you want all your guns to be the same type (except for some ships that have turrets+launchers)
A single type of tank (armor OR shield not both)
If you see a large group of people fighting, only watch if you can cloak and are sure they won't be able to uncloak you before you can get away
trust nobody
Read up on the bonuses which ships offer to determine what you want to train for or what you want to fit on a ship.
This way you don't improperly fit a ship by, say, fitting autocannons on a ship which provides a bonus to heavy missiles.

I personally fit an Estamel's Modified Invulnerability Field to all of my armor tanking ships so they don't eat through my shields as fast and I have more time to turn on my Civilian Armor Repair.
