Wii60, if you want any help with mining, contact Commander Kennedy ingame. I can't help you physically, being in a wormhole and all, but I will give you advice and tips and such.
It just gives your game significantly more options. If you train for missions the skills you use to make money will also help you get into pvp, exploration, or whatever else you want to do, whereas in mining the skills are only useful for mining and industry, and don't carry over into other areas.

The problem being many new players start out and find mining the easiest thing to do, and invest all their time and effort into it. When they box themselves in and get bored of it, they leave the game and spread the notion that EVE is just a big boring spreadsheet simulator, which is not the case.

I second this notion. However, I also agree with those who oppose mining.
It really isn't a good choice at all for newbies, or anybody for that matter.
If they try it and decide they like it, then good for them. But if someone comes waltzing into this thread talking about how much they want to make loads of ISK and then mention that they're looking at mining as a possible avenue of reaching such a goal, then there's going to be people who will voice their bitter opposition to the act of mining asteroids.

While these can get you good isk, they're not new player friendly. If you're talking in general the best way to make isk in the game, trading is the answer, but that requires a lot of investment money and market research (you need to know what's worth trading).
I would say the best way for a new player to make money on a regular basis is by salvaging. Low skill requirement, generally low risk (depending on where you are), and it's easy to haul around to sell once you've collected a big pile of stuff.
If you can find an L4 runner who will let you tag along, that's easy money for very little investment. You can also probe out mission runners (search google for guides on how to do it) and take their salvage whether they want you to or not.
What I found works well for new players is Salvage L4 Missions > Tag along on L4 Missions (Kill Frigs) > Do L4 Missions (Help DPS/Tank) > Do L1-4 Missions (Solo)

Half of most alliances are supported by Indy people. You can't always get money by just killing people. Besides, who are the people that build the titans?
