Only time Steamworks will be optional, like Morrowind and Oblivion, is when Steamworks gets added post-launch, which is a different scenario. If the game is announced as 'Steamworks' pre-launch, it's safe to assume it will be Steam-Only.

It will probably be sold in stores too like Dark Messiah, with the choice to register it in steam or just install and play.

I'm not actually sure of the reason why though. And you need to register it on Steam no matter what for Multiplayer.

Steamworks, better combat, really good visuals, more interesting looking armour, dragons.. I don't think I can wait.

I'm okay with Steam but I really don't like how it's forcing people who dislike Steam to use it. Could be losing a lot of sales that way. But the game's going to be great so I don't give a shit.

I do agree that having to run ANYTHING in the background on a SP game is bull. Why should I have to run GFWL when playing Bioshock 2? Why do I HAVE to be online to even save my progress?
