So long as upgrading makes a visual change in an item...
Welp. It doesn't so...
(So Pete has said, at least.)
The armor degradation thing is yet another case of take it out instead of fixing it, damn it Bethesda
Some people like the fact that they need to make sure their armor is intact.

Yes, that was what I said, I like repairing my armor, adds another level. the system didn't make sense/wasn't fun in their opinion so they stripped it out instead of trying to FIX it.
Upgrading probably increases the Armor Rating so you don't have to look for better armor types when you level up, which would be cool, because then you could you could be level 50 and still wear Iron Armor like a bawss, but I'm probably wrong...
Smithing I think means the armor gets better looking with each upgrade. That or there's random armors.
Look at these two: They're the same armor, one of them just has more stuff attached.

EDIT:
As for armor and weapon degradation, eh, good riddance. It was poorly implemented in Oblivion.
Fallout 3 and New Vegas did it better, and IMO it fit more with those games from a role playing perspective, because everything else is falling down around you, including your equipment.
Armor and weapon repair in Fallout 3 and NV = Immersive and fitting
Armor and weapon repair in Oblivion = Non-immersive and silly
Yeah, they could have included forges and stuff to repair your gear, but that would just make the game frustrating. Imagine being in a dungeon with all your crap broke and no easy way to get out. Fallout 3 has places like that. If New Vegas didnt have the jury rig perk I would have gone insane.
I like how the forests look like, well, forests. It should be really atmospheric walking around in one.

I'm not quite so sure on this topic.
I do know Pete said on twitter that armor appearance doesn't change when upgraded, but on multiple occasions we have seen the same set of armor looking different... So I truly have no clue.

It's freaking Edoras, dude

Yes, the developers are big LOTR fans.

Pete is pretty darn vague on a lot of things.
Also, how many people here play Dwarf Fortress?
I'm gonna make a mod that allows you to loot bones and meat from anything you kill, including NPCs. And I'll make Argonian, Khajiit, and human "Skins" as pelts like from wolves, so you can make leather clothing from the skin of your victims. Oh and turn their bones into bone arrows and weapons.
JUST LIKE IN DWARF FORTRESS!
No weapon or armor ever broke on my hands without me wanting it to, people that would let them brake are either incompetent babbys or has constant corrosion on self

I'm fairly certain it's been said armour won't change aesthetically when upgraded, apart from glowing when enchanted.

The armors will have no visible effect from the upgrading through.
Also, why haven't Bethesda merged enchanting and smithing yet? They are basically the same except enchanting adds a magical effect to the weapon/armor while smithing just upgrades the weapon/armor.

Adds another level of tedium more like.

Enchanting is magic related, and smithing is more warrior orientated. I imagine that would make it more difficult to group the two together.
I remember when I was playing Oblivion it kept telling me that guards were after me and I couldn't fast travel because of it, even though I could talk to guards without them trying to arrest me. So I figured I'd just take down an Oblivion gate and hope the bug goes away
Half way up the Sigil Tower this fucking guard comes up the steps behind me
"Have a nice day."
then walks out

He literally went through hell to wish you a nice day.

No idea how he managed it since my strategy to get through Oblivion is to just run past all the monsters
I should have checked outside to see if he killed them all

Kind of getting sick of the whole "everything that isn't human, ork, or part beast is an elf"

Actually, Orcs are Mer too. :v:

Especially as these don't seem very elflike

Put the grey fox's mask on, then off in the middle of the Imperial city, every guard comes and wishes you a nice day :v:

Dwarves in the Elder scrolls are actually elves
Also a reason for health regen could be there for when you sleep. If it regenerates at the same rate when you are asleep, you could need to sleep for hours after a big battle (rather than just a power nap)
Dwarves in the Elder scrolls are actually elves

Now, the dwemer I understand. that's an interesting, unique take on the idea of dwarves and elves. But Falmer just seem like goblins. Goblins aren't elves.
So Falmer are Goblin like creatures that wear spider heads as helmets.
To be honest, I wasn't expecting another Goblin monster, but whatever.
I mean, for Falmer going by the name at least, maybe Ayleids or crazy ass humanoids
If you weren't so ignorant to the lore you'd understand why everything is descendant of elves.

Actually Rieklings were another sort of Mer. Perhaps the Falmer is the "Correct" term for Riekling.
Define 'everything' when found in the phrase 'everything is descended from elves'
Define 'everything' when found in the phrase 'everything is descended from elves'
I don't know much about Elder Scrolls, but all I can remember that the only race that isn't related to anything else in some way are the Argonians, because they're actually descended from Hist Trees themselves. Supposedly.
http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Lore:Ehlnofey
EDIT:
Elder Scrolls lore is pretty damn crazy.
Masser is the body of a giant dead god, as well as all the other "Planets" in the "Solar system" of Mundus. Its never mentioned if Space faring technologies could let people from Nirn land on these "planets" anyway, which is something I always wondered.
Also the stars and sun are actually holes in outer space where a god named Aetherius shines through. Thats where the light and magic of Elder Scrolls comes from.
Define 'everything' when found in the phrase 'everything is descended from elves'
Well obviously "everything" was meant as a generalization of the races in question.
But if you want me to get technical, the Mer are descendants of the Ehlnofey, which are believed to be the ancient descendants of the Aedra themselves, and in turn are the ancestors of Men and Mer.

What quest does that lore come in on?
