Not everyone has a great internet connection and offline mode on Steam sucks horse cock.
Steamworks is amazing, I'd want it in all my games even if they're single player.

Now I don't use it much myself, but the few times I have used it I had no problems at all with Offline Mode, and I've never heard complaints from friends that need to use it because of their own internet connections.

That is why gameboy roms and the like have been able to continue so strong, as a front they're provided as 'backups' or 'replacement files' for people who've already spent their money.

For those wondering why I don't want steam to be compulsory:

[b]*[/b] I have a 4MB/s internet connection but for some reason, (i have tried all the textbook fixes), steam RARELY every downloads games above 200KB/s.
[b]*[/b] Due to things like my synology diskstation (and only 1 ethernet port) I don't always have internet.

BATTLEFIELD 3 IS DIFFERENT. Its battelog client is required to play BF3, and origin just hitchhikes ontothat.
I've playedd the Alpha; and battelog is a shitload faster than BC2's system of joining servers was.

Maybe because you've misread 4 megabits as four megabytes? Even if you get the game reatail and you activate it on steam, you have the option to install from disc. Do that, wait for Skyrim's Script Extender, and you're home free.

20/8 (8 bits in a byte) = 2.5 mega[B]byte[/B] download speed
a 4 mega bit package will only get you about 500kb/s download speed.

Steam Offline Mode exists for a reason.
Connect to the internet when you install, and the next time you launch, if you have no internet, you can use offline mode.

It's overpriced but it works as well as any other local ISPs.
