Because they look fairly cool and, up until Oblivion (and seems to be returning in Skyrim) they had awesome voices. Also Jiub was a Dunmer, and he killed all the Cliff Racers in Tamriel.

I did like the Morrowind Dunmer. It's nice to have a race that has a bit more edge and not all societies are all love and tolerance. Oblivion Dunmer were a bunch of fairies that had no personality whatsoever.

I really wanna give Daggerfall a try, just because the sheer size of it sounds very impressive. Then again I'm not the most hardcore RPG player so I dunno if I'd fare too well.
