The point is it seems and sounds like, to me, the engine was based on gamebyro, but has since had itself redesigned so much so that nothing of gamebyro remains, thus, it's a new engine.

Why are we arguing about game engines? What's important is the quality of the game itself. I hate to use such a cliche example, but look at Minecraft. The engine is utter crap, but the game's the most popular Indie title to date. You can build a great game on a terrible engine, same as you can make a terrible game on a great engine. The difference lies in the skill and creativity of the designers, not the pure technical ability of the underlying software.

Even through it was annoying, the item weight system was at least realistic and hindered you from carrying every weapon and armor set in the entire game with you. It was also an interesting element, like in the mages guild quest with the ring of burden.

I'm one of those "pack rat" types that likes to pick up and keep everything.

If there was no encumbrance, by the end of the game it would probably take 10 minutes just to scroll through my inventory.
