The codework of an engine generally needs to be optimized for a vast array of PC hardware plus all the combinations of that said hardware. With a console, you can optimize the game very, very well for that one set of hardware in the console. That and your computer is generally already operating under a memory and cpu overhead just by running the operating system and programs in the background, and can't nessarily use 100% of it's system resources anyways, whereas the console probably devote a very large portion of their processing power to the game.

Thanks for those screenshots, Hypno. I like the Daggerfall-Morrowind vibe some of these screenshots have; and the last screenshot looks fantastic; reminds me of northern Solstheim in a good way.
