Unfortunately I'm sure you're right. Although in Morrowind you were the sole reincarnation of an ancient hero/god, so basically the same thing there. You never know, they could go the more subtle route.

One thing I miss was in Morrowind where you got a house built for you, that was immerive to drop by now and then and see progress being made.

Yep, but apart from heavy hinting, that didn't become obvious until about 3/5 of the way through the Main Plot.

Indeed, for half of the plot, it seemed like you were a sham put up by the Empire to stave off disaster.

Pretty sure that was confirmed awhile ago as to what would happen to essential people. Oblivion just had them get knocked unconscious and get back up a minute later.
