Kerbal Space Program, or: "How many rockets can I slap onto this thing?"

I mean, that thing has like 4 boosters. That might be good for a short suborbital flight, but escape velocity?
So it is a giant nuclear mars rover?
basically yes.

here see some dude talking about stuff somehow related to the MSL http://www.nasa.gov/multimedia/nasatv/index.html
What has science done....
Hey guys.

It launches in just under 17 hours.
Needs more stages.
I should know, I'm a rocket surgeon.
I'm going to watch it live. Can't wait.

Online, not the real thing.
wtf is all this crap. Parachutes and drop ships? why!!

It's too big for airbags. Conceptually, it's a lander that will 'land' a few dozen feet in the air, then lower the rover. It actually makes sense when you think about it.

I have to admit that the powered descent is really, really cool, even if there's probably a better way.

I was thinking that it also might be too fragile for airbags.
seems like one wrong thing and it goes the way of most mars rovers.

If there was a better way, they wouldn't be doing it this way.
Well, if they knew of a better way.
It's too big and fragile for both parachutes and airbags.
I finally got my first orbit! Apokee was around 100,000m and perokee was 41km. It was perfect for me because I wanted to land but didn't have anything else on the rocket at that point to go back. made at least two complete orbits then landed on dark side of the kerbin.

41km is well in the upper atmosphere, but well done. Especially for a first orbit.
[editline]25th November 2011[/editline]
My first orbit was about 40km and 323km, but that was well before what we have now.

Could someone record the stream? About 5 min before the liftoff, all the launch, and a good part of the (if any) post commentary? It's a lot, but I'm going to a car show. :v:

I just figured out that when Mars is at it's furthest teoretical point from the Earth (both at their Aphelions), on oposite sides of the sun, light uses about 1337 seconds to travel from one to the other.
:downs:

If it was a few hours later, I'd offer to do it, but it's too early for me to be able to record it.

It will be up on youtube in a couple days, max.
[editline]edit[/editline]
Or if someone can show me a program to use then I could try doing it for you.
I'm going to try and wake up early for it (west coaster), I'll see if FRAPS can record it. If not, well, it's highly likely NASA themselves or someone else will put it up on youtube or something.
what time does it launch east coast time??
what time does it launch east coast time??
I think it's between 10 and 12 in the morning.

that thing will go to mars but going to the moon requires SaturnV :/
that thing will go to mars but going to the moon requires SaturnV :/
MSL is just a car-sized rover that weighs 2,000 pounds. Going to the moon required a lander, a service module, and capsule. Altogether it weighed about 100,000 pounds.

lol I am aware. i have been to the cape and seen it all in person :D but still. it just means manned mission to mars is umm.. unlikely.

Where will the sky crane go? Will it just launch a few hundred feet away then crash?
