Eh, I suppose I'll [del]show-off[/del] post my video in this thread too.
Messing around with parachute-less re-entry, in preparation for when we get lander-modules.

Well I landed. What now?

a little hint

Do you have a link to this?
Made it to 70Km before landing the craft safely, making it the highest I've been without losing the ability to return. Tomorrow I'll shoot for 100Km.

I finally made it into space after like two hours of exploding rockets at the launch pad although now i can't return because I've run out of fuel. Godspeed you brave little Kerbalians, Godspeed.
also i have no idea what the fuck that parachute is doing there.
So like, do wings really DO anything useful? All I've noticed is that if I use them on parts horizontally attached to my rocket they make said part more liable to go batshit insane and start swinging all over the place. Or am I just using them wrong?
Bombs and Wings link in OP links back to the ion engine link :v:

Also, for some reason in 0.8.3, my rocket likes to skip from stage 4 to stage 2, which causes complete chaos and messes up everything. Any ideas?

My mouse is highlighting the stage that it jumps to, the reverse rocket.
someone needs to make a good landing gear thing, a bit like side decouplers.
someone needs to make a good landing gear thing, a bit like side decouplers.
they just snap off, someone tried it already
they just snap off, someone tried it already
Oh. Did he land too fast? You have to be pretty careful landing. I managed to do it with enough decouplers.
Can't quite figure out how to enter an orbit, what's the trick to that?
Can't quite figure out how to enter an orbit, what's the trick to that?
Orbiting is basically falling forward so fast you miss the ground entirely and just keep on falling
So what you need is horizontal speed. Lots of it. And also, you need to be high up enough so that there is no atmosphere to slow you down, otherwise you just fall back to the ground.
So the usual procedure for a proper launch into orbit is this:
Launch straight up, and continue to climb up to about 10000 meters.
Then, gradually start leveling off. You will start gaining horizontal speed.
Now you're basically trading vertical speed for horizontal speed. The idea is to get to 0 vertical speed at about 40000 meters up, and be moving horizontally at about 2300m/s
At this speed, the arc you would describe while falling on a ballistic trajectory is about the same curvature as the planet itself, ergo, you fall and miss the ground.
At 40000 meters, the effect of air resistance is negligible, so there's essentially nothing to slow you down and you can cut the power and just coast your way through the orbit.
It takes a bit of practice, but it is certainly possible
Hope this helps
Cheers
Wings are very useful for heat dispersal if you have a lot of solid fuel boosters close to each other.
I've found that putting them low on the craft helps stabilise it, while putting them higher up causes it to go nuts and wobble.
Having different types of wings helps apparently.
So far my best approach is using 4 solid rocket boosters to get off the pad and get some altitude. Then enable Liquid boosters with a good deal of fuel each to get into orbit.
Challenge, Fly 1 round the planet, and try to land back on the launch pad.

I decided to make a smaller version using modded parts

works perfect, and I think it's easier because the engine is weaker.
Looks a bit like the lunar lander, very nice.

I just took parachute texture (they're raw .pngs people!), made stripes white instead of orange and pasted logo on top. Nothing impossible or difficult to make, but here's texture anyways.
Warning: It might suck at higher gfx settings and is product of 1 min work (just noticed there are orange artifacts).

EDIT: Almost forgot, put it in \KSP\Parts\parachute_single\textures

Did symmetry get put in yet?

Yes.
8.4?

Nevermind. I have it.
Any news on the next update yet like what will be in it or when it will come out?
