How do I speed the game up? Its boring waiting for the descent
You can use cheat engine to speed the game up, things can get a bit crazy though.

god

I think i overdid it a bit...

I don't get it
Damn, I thought I managed to get into orbit, fucked it up, tapped the atmosphere when I came close to the planet and atmospheric drag pretty much stopped me in my tracks.
I don't get it
I was only supposed to go into Orbit a few feet above the atmosphere.
Everytime I orbit, I get to around 60k, try to kill all my vertical speed, get up to 2300m/s horizontally as best as I can. I always end up getting up to 100,000m then back down to Kearth.
when you guys talk about orbit, do you actually in orbit around the planet, or are you just flying in a circle around it?
when you guys talk about orbit, do you actually in orbit around the planet, or are you just flying in a circle around it?
actually orbit
I just orbited using 2 SRBs and 1 Liquid Motor with 3 fuel tanks.
I forgot a decoupler for the Liquid Motor and a parachute though.

UPDATE!
I decided to make a smaller version using modded parts

works perfect, and I think it's easier because the engine is weaker.
Ah, I figured mods would allow for a better lander, I just wanted to stay vanilla.
8.5 is out!
* Added copying of parts (and sets of parts) by holding Alt while clicking on them.
* Replaced tricoupler textures and UV mapping (UV map by Dippeggs)
* Parachutes can now deploy automatically if jettisoned along with other parts (allowing for parts to be safely landed)
* Stage decouplers can now share fuel across stages.
* Added Keys to control the camera in the VAB (+/- for zooming, pgup/pgdown for scrolling)
* Added Keys to control the camera in flight (+/- for zooming)
* Added some sound effects for the parachute opening
* Added cfg-definable parameter for parachute autodeployment delay
* Added a debugging console to the game (can be toggled with Ctrl+Alt+Shift+C)
* Right-clicking the Symmetry Button will now step the symmetry mode back.
* It is no longer possible to select a part of the ship while the mouse is over any interface items.
* Added toggle key to switch between precision or instant input modes (Caps Lock)
* Pitch, Yaw and Roll gauges change color to indicate mode (orange for instant, cyan for precision)
* Exposed Kd, Ki and Kp parameters for tuning the SAS and CommandPod modules
Bug Fixes:
* Fixed the staging lock LED not turning purple after launch
* Icons no longer show a transparent border floating around then mousing over disconnected parts.
* Fixed a bug where deleting a symmetrical part would sometimes leave it’s counterparts floating around.
* Fixed a bug where creating a new stage with a decoupler and then removing it would generate errors.
* Fixed most sound volume decay over distance problems.
* Fixed a bug that caused a massive performance drop when fuel tanks emptied (fuel tank switch lag bug)
* The Flight camera will now remain always centered on the ship’s center of mass.
* The Screenshot function will now create a Screenshots directory if one isn’t found.
* The altimeter will now go past 999,999K correctly (it will move up to 1000M, then 1000G, 1000T and so on)
* Fixed a bug that could cause large ships to explode at 5,000m altitude.
Can someone link me the giant orange ball cheat tanks?
The website is being a bitch. So if you need a link to 0.8.5.

I love how much this game has ballooned in a week. Can't wait to see what it grows up to become.
So I build this behemoth and launch it into space.

Works like a charm. Capsule gets into orbit with enough fuel left for a return trip. After orbiting a few times, I figure it's time to go home. Give her a quick backward burn to kill off speed and let gravity do the rest.

Almost came down right on top of the landing pad. What are the odds of that.

Unlisted change: radial decouplers now leave the attachment parts on the rocket after separation
Apparently they always did, nevermind
Unlisted change: radial decouplers now leave the attachment parts on the rocket after separation
They've always done that.
They've always done that.
Oh, I never noticed.
Man we've really done good by giving the KSP dev team so much attention. Lots of good games like this often go un-noticed, but this one has been saved :)

All thanks to general ingame media thread?
"Losing altitude, sir."
"Damn it. Damn it." spat the CAPCOM. He gripped the microphone. "Okay boys, looks like you're headed home again earlier than expected," he said as he rubbed his forehead wearily. "We're putting the recovery team in Kiberia on alert. Damn good show out there today, we're sure to get it next time."
There was a brief pause, then a burst of static. "Roger control, preparing to maneuver for descent."
Jeb couldn't keep the disappointment out of his voice. He looked to his right at Bill. "I really thought we'd do it this time."
Bill did his best to reach around the harnesses and pat his friend on the back. "Hey, look at the bright side. We made it halfway around the planet in fifteen minutes! That's got to be a speed record at least."
Jeb smiled. "Yeah. We're going about two-"
"Don't tell me how fast we're going." Jeb turned around to see Bob, utterly motionless, his eyes fixed on some point out the window. "Just don't. Please." he whispered.
"Just once, Jerry," said the CAPCOM as he sipped his coffee and leaned on his console, "I'd like for something to go right with one of these missions."
They were descending rapidly now. Jeb eased the craft around so that they were facing Kearth's surface. Far below, the lights of distant cities flickered like constellations in their own small galaxy, spread out across the dark landscape. He felt a pang of regret that yet again they had fallen short. The crown jewel was right there in front of them as always. Not for the first time Jeb pictured a photo himself and the crew in a history book: first Kerbals to orbit the planet."
It was only then that he glanced at the controls again. Something caught his eye, but he couldn't quite put his finger on what. Then, suddenly, he saw it. Cautiously, he opened the link to the CAPCOM.
"Control, this is Jebediah. Are you keeping an eye on our instruments?"
The CAPCOM felt a thrill of fear. He turned back to his console and responded. "No, Commander. Is there a problem? Is something wrong?" flashbacks of the crew of test vehicle AQD 37 filled his memory. He woulnd't allow that to happen again. Not now. Not when they were so close.
"You might want to check the altimeter." Jeb let a smile slowly creep across his face.
The CAPCOM looked across the aisle of the control room. "Well?" he said quietly. The technician looked at the display, then back to him, several times. "Sir, their descent... is..." for a moment he paused, utterly shocked at what he was about to say. "...slowing. It's almost... no, it..." all conversation in the control room suddenly stopped as each Kerbal leaned forward in their seat. "Sir... they're.... they're going up! They've stopped falling! They're ascending! "
The CAPCOM sat in shock, mouth agape.
The silence was broken by a static crackle.
"This is Commander Jebediah Kerman: Gentlemen, we have ORBIT! AHAHAHAHAHA!"
A warning siren sounded as Jeb grabbed the throttle. Forcing it all the way forward, he shot the last of their fuel into space. To his sides he heard the whimpers and screams of his comrades as they careened into the sunrise.
In mission control, a cheer exploded. They'd done it. Orbit. The Kerbal Space Program had finally succeeded.

Sorry about the wall of text. I thought a little dramatization of my first orbit would be more fun than a simple, "PICTURE OF MY FIRST SUNRISE HURR" post. :v:
But that is how it happened. I really thought they were going to plummet back into the ocean on the dark side, when, unexpectedly, they started descending slower... and slower... until they started going back up again! Hands down the greatest feeling any game has ever given me.
[editline]18th July 2011[/editline]
Think I've got them into a descent now... perigee was 101458, apogee was something like 190100 :v:
[editline]18th July 2011[/editline]
I sent the ship into a daring somersault manuever to slingshot them back towards the ground when i disconnected the command module.
And so the kerbonauts bid a tear-jerking farewell to the rocket that carried them around the planet twice on this historic flight...

And scream right past the intended landing site. FUCK.
[editline]18th July 2011[/editline]
Didn't work. They're stuck in orbit forever. Oh well. :(
Unlisted bug fix: Holding shift and scrolling up now zooms in/scrolling down zooms out, whereas it was previously inverted.

My stages are firing out of sequence, it's ejecting the command module instead of my boosters.
Edit: Bob knows what's really going on.

Read the op :)
[editline]19th July 2011[/editline]
Atmosphere is precisely at 34 500 meters :v: I just had a orbit and no fuel left, I only had the escape tower left. Used that to de-orbit, was close to 0 on vertical speed when the parachute caught air and slowed me down at 34 500 meters!
Now the question is: Will I blow up?
