sounds good, oh and a lot of the late tier German stuff shares engines and radios with the TD line, so if you elite the TDs you'll essentially have almost everything unlocked for everything else except turrets, tracks, and guns (hell the Ferdinand unlocks the fucking Porsche engines)
Cuts down pretty well on the grind if you want to do other stuff on the German tree.
Like the FuG 12 radio, fucking everything uses that.

Quite a few of the german TD's are mediocre, but the end pay off is worth it, same for the American TD line. The Soviet TD line is pretty fun, the T-28 is a fun medium if its your style, the KV152 is trolltastic, KV3 is decent, IS line is good. Go for it.

Are they really mediocre? I mean I just saw some hetzer make everyone his bitch and Id love to do 2 trees and not one. The T-28 is actually my next tank
The Tier IV thru VI are the meh german TD but the tier VII -> IX are the best. (JagdPanther, Ferdinand, JagdTiger).
The Soviet TD tree is as so: Tier I -> Tier VI are the best (Unsure on SU-152, ISU) and the 704 is pretty lame from what I've heard
The US TD tree I don't know much about.

I feel like progressing up the french tree if only for the novelty of having an autoloader, should I just go light to minimize the grind or is it not worth it?

Most of them are average, and the later tiers are amazing, JagdPanther, Ferdi, Jagdtiger, all great tanks. But the earlier tanks aren't as good, some hate them, some love them, but most hate. If you're going for the T-28,get the 57's
Marder 2 is the best TD I have ever had. Hetzer the second best. StuG is average. Jagdpz4 is mediocre. Jagdpanther is amazing, I heard. Ferdinand is quite strong, Jagdtiger is really strong.
