Not sure about the types of fish, as I didn't give it much thought, but I agree %100 that there needs to be more color and life under the ocean surface; I WANT MY RAPTURE NOAW!
Please make Anglerfish, they're the most awesome sea-creature ever.
The males are only one tenth of the female angler-fishes size, and they can't consume food.
They live solely to find a female Anglerfish to mate with. Anglerfish mate by having the male Anglerfish use his teeth to latch onto the female, where it will then over time completely merge with her body. Over time the male angler-fish attached to the female will lose things unnecessary after latching to her, such as eyes and internal organs. The male Anglerfish sole purpose in life will after this be to inject the female with his sperm when the female is in safety.
Clearly this proves that Anglerfish is the most awesome fish to ever have existed, and you need to have it in your mod.

The type of fish that's present should depend on the depth of the water in that area. Smaller fish are higher up and get larger as you go down, eventually ending with octopi and anglerfish at the bottom of the ocean.

I liked it and it stopped working one day and everyone abandoned this thread.
Fishing does seem a little dry. While we're at it, why not a bait system or fishing rods of different vanilla sticks to handle weight of bigger fish?
We need the big fish to have models, or just give all fish models and give them simple AI like sometimes chasing the fishing hook.

Craft jellyfish, get slimeballs.
You should be able to fish up an old boot. When you fish up two, you can combine them with gold/diamond and feathers to make wing boots that let you run faster and jump higher.
I actually spend a lot of time fishing in minecraft when I'm bored and listen to music. It's kind of cool to have chests full of fish.
