Tbh I think spiders should be the smartest, and abandoned mineshafts should have little one-block wide tunnels the spiders can navigate to hunt you. It'd make it a much scarier experience.

I personally think creepers should be the smartest, i mean they allready seem to have some kind of eerie intelligence.
I can't say how many times i've had them just watch me from a distance when they could have easily just came right up to me, but instead they stand back and wait for the right moment.
Or when they run at me and stop right before a hole, when other mobs would just walk right off the edge.

They should be intelligent but not the same as this new zombie intelligence. They should be more sneaky and hide behind 2 block high walls sometimes.

In my adventure map, for level two I'm adding a cave system with lava pools with magma slimes in them, and for the boss area I have it filled with blaze spawners, but near it there is chainmail is fire-resistance to help. The boss area is near the entrance to the cave, but it's blocked off with a iron fence wall with TNT under it, and somewhere I'll have a room with a lever that'll set the TNT off the player can proceed.
However, I'm out of ideas for things to put in it, and I'm not sure just making more tunnels is a good idea. Anyone?

I don't get how last page everyone was saying that zombies shouldnt have the path finding, or that all the mobs should. Its the zombies advantage, think about it. Skeletons can shoot, spiders can climb, creepers can explode, what can zombies do? Out of the 4 basic mobs in the game, zombies do nothing. You get attacked by a horde of skeletons? Thats a problem. 2 spiders attack you? Bit of an issue. A single creeper? Thats hard to deal with. I've seen people stop dead in their tracks and work the best way [I]around[/I] a creeper to make sure it doesn't notice them. Yet the zombies you can just mow down with ease. The fact they have advanced path finding should be their thing...and not any other mobs thing. Maybe update the current mobs path finding but they should always keep zombies as really smart. And to those who say that zombies are dumb and shouldn't be able to track you so easily...man just say they have a nose for human flesh or something. It fits guys srsly.
The other mobs do sorta need better path-finding though. I stopped a Creeper by walking away from it, placing a 2 block high wall in front of it, then peeking around the corner and sealing him in a box of snow blocks. He was too dumb to just walk around the 2x1x1 pillar I constructed in front of him.
The Zombie pathfinding still has a lot of flaws though. When they walk on Soul Sand or Slabs, they spin in place like an undead Catherine wheel, and they seem almost too happy to walk straight through burning Netherrack.
Still, they're not as bad as the Testificates.

Maybe a room filled with Endermen? Without Pumpkin helmets, they're basically doomed. You could add a hard-to-find Pumpkin helmet at the end of a tough challenge though.
Also, have some way to stop the spawners besides breaking them. TNT, holes that they need to seal to prevent them from emerging from the spawner room, etc.
The soul sand and slabs actually sounds like... Balance. Also, spinning zombies are hilarious.
Alright, I decided I would change what was the boss room to just another room, and the lever to it is further in the cave. This is the boss room.

So, you press a button, and a bridge starts building across the gap, but a bunch of blazes are unleashed and the player has to defend himself while the bridge builds.
Sound pretty neat. Good idea.

If I may ask, what systems do you have in place to build the bridge? A piston-cobble-lava generator?
Yeah. Sadly since they only go 15 blocks it doesn't last as long as it should, but considering how many blazes I have it should be a good fight.
Also, I will use the enderman idea. I like it.
