Depends on the Champion. I don't generally do AP runes either. CDR is very handy for Katarina I find, since it makes my ultimate available every 30~ seconds. On Karma it reduces cooldown for Mantra and obviously my spells, so I can concentrate on more support items if needed.
Yeah but your examples are champions that need cooldown reduction BADLY. Karma can't use half her skills without mantra, and there aren't many CDR items without mana for Katarina.

malphite is a pretty good laner, so it makes sense if the enemies he went against fucked it up early on

the "buffs" to him were things that didn't really need changing. (Q CD reduction is always welcome, but wasn't enough to do anything)

the spellvamp and lifesteal quints are completely worthless and ap/ad quints will do much much more for any champion than the spellvamp/lifesteal ones do.
how do you guys even farm up enough to buy so many runes
hell, i still have some t2 runes on my caster page
I only have 2 runepages with full tier 3 runes on both pages, one focusing on ap and the other on ad
edit: I have enough runes to make an almost entirely new page but I prefer buying champions
Almost all of my runes come from having a spare bit of IP after buying a champion and then getting some runes that benefit that champion
i find that arpen marks, flat armor yellows, mr/level blues, and ad and arpen quints seem to satisfy all the roles i currently play
probably not optimal, but oh well i have no money and i need to eternally buy champions
I think I'm still missing a few ap blues and an ap quint before I can call a full leblanc page complete

I personally can't live with just two runepages. I like to have at least one for each role + one/ two for the one I specialize in. Although I kind of screwed up, bought a few and then decided to buy the 7 bundle so that makes 12;

well really i dont think im good enough for runes to make much of a difference anyways, i might buy more runepages once i get better, but im probably always gonna have general runepages since i never stick to one champion for too long, even if i mastered them.
runes really don't matter anyway they just make laning a little bit easier
