The thing that irks me is when I wanna see the ranges of my abilities and such before activating an ability, iunno.
well smartcasting is just holding shift + Q/W/E/R/D/F/1/2/3/4/5/6
so you can still just press the button without shift to see the range
and when you're used to a champion you pretty much know the general range of stuff anyway

When I play champs with long range skills (ashe, Lux, Zurr-wrath, TF, Noct, etc) I unlock the camera, pan to where I need to hit, use the skill, and then lock before I get there (in case of TF, and Noct) otherwise I nuke the spot I'm nuking, Lock cam, Unlock Artillery mode, and leave.

and for this, hovering over the ability button shows you the range of it, you can just do that, and Smartcasting forces you to memorize the distance the shot travels.
I made the switch to smartcasting like three weeks ago and it's incredibly improved my gameplay. The only skills I don't use it for are Alistar's Q and Morde's E, because Ali's Q on smartcast will break the WQ combo, and Morde's E has a really odd range that I can never quite remember.
Some Champs you just cant use smartcast with.
Try to set stuff with Veigar. W + E with smartcast will always be anywhere but the place you wanted it to be

with veigars stun you sort of need the shadow image to know where the exact edge of it is and therefore be able to actually hit people with it

but the falling explosion thing is easy to aim
its just a delayed karthus q that also has slightly more range
the only champion I use smartcast with is twitch
I use smartcast for everything except new champions that I'm getting the hang of. I switch the key bindings for normal and smartcasting, so I don't need to use the shift key unless I want to see the aiming reticule.

you can land veigers shit fine with smartcasting, you just need to memorize how his shit lands
the only champs you can't smartcast with is rumble (because of his ult) and vicktor (because of his e)

they fixed rumbles ult so it starts where you first pressed it and ends wherever you drag it
actually you can smartcast rumbles ult and viktors e just fine
also veigar is easy to smartcast on wtf
you click the center of the stun, so use that

You can use smartcast on Viktor. You hold the button down and then drag your mouse in the direction you want it to go. When you release the cast button, it activates.
It's pretty buggy though, because if you start where it's out of range he just stands there
I only use smartcast on Udyr
