Well, mostly because this games apparent popularity really confuses me. I'm beginning to think the only reason it's getting any attention is because it was made by McMillen. It's just so poorly designed on so many levels. As for "how you use the items," well... most items are purely passive, so you don't really have a choice of "how" to use them. In fact, you can only carry one "usable" item and one pill or tarot card, the latter two of which are 9 times out of 10 completely useless. The problem is, roguelikes are all about learning the game's mysteries and slowly mastering them. In this game, there really aren't any. Like I said, its core gameplay is purely strafe-shoot-strafe-shoot etc.
I thought rogue-likes were random every game and you had to learn from each new start?

I enjoy pattern based gameplay and being able to nearly flawless enemies because I know how they work, how they're scripted to act etc. It was just 4.49, a game that McMillen made because he was literally just bored at the time, it's just a time killer really, not something you're supposed to dig into. And agreed, it is getting far more attention just because "It's by that guy who did super meat boy" but, I just happen to like the game, that's all :v: On that note jesus christ ending 10 and the new credits music is fucking creepy, the game didn't creep me out till then.
I thought rogue-likes were random every game and you had to learn from each new start?
Hell no. Well. Not GOOD roguelikes, at least. The reason roguelikes are so great is that the focus is on you (the player) improving over many plays. Slowly, you learn the many applications of each item and the tactics of enemies, etc. For example, in Shiren the Wanderer, Bottomless Jars seem pointless at first, but you'll later find that throwing them produces a Pitfall trap which is quite helpful for stealing from shopkeepers. Or, in NetHack, you may learn that you can actually batter enemies with cockatrice corpses to turn them to stone. (Which is pretty dumb, but cool regardless. :v:) There's really none of that in this game. I THINK Tarot Cards and Pills are even randomized, so learning what the white/blue pill does on one playthrough doesn't benefit you in the least in future games. Furthermore, items are incredibly one-dimensional. A belt increases your speed and... that's it. It just increases your speed. The Inner Eye adds two projectiles to each shot and... that's it. Etc. Now, before someone tries to ask me what I would do to improve items, the answer is you can't. The core gameplay itself is too simple for its own good. There's very little complexity, and items' effect on gameplay is nearly entirely superficial.
I must be the only person who bought the game because it was different. I thought the art style was similar to SMB but didn't know who the guy was anyway.

As a time-killer it works just fine, but personally it could only hold my attention for about three hours. Meanwhile, something like Dungeons of Dredmor is available for the same price and has infinitely more complexity and interest, calling into question this game's worth. (Or hell, you could play NetHack for free which is easily one of the deepest and most compelling games ever created.)

Isaac is like...a 30-45 minute dungeon crawler. I don't think stuff would stay the same when its so short and simple. Yes, it's chancy and I hate it. But it's addicting as fuck for me. Especially Satan's toys. You find a bunch of stuff if you look around. Sometimes you get shit, sometimes you get showered in good stuff. Iunno, I find it fun at least. Rage-inducing but fun. Better than getting carpal tunnel playing SMB

I've got chocolate milk, the wire coat hanger, and the third eye. Killed gluttony in 2 shots

In Rogue, a potion of cat-eye will always do the same thing, as will a potion of blindness.
Stop trying to superimpose some nonexistent standard of complexity on the game. It's mindless fun, aesthetically interesting, and cheap.
Stop trying to superimpose some nonexistent standard of complexity on the game. It's mindless fun, aesthetically interesting, and cheap.
All in all, this. [editline]3rd October 2011[/editline]
I've got chocolate milk, the wire coat hanger, and the third eye. Killed gluttony in 2 shots
Choco milk is great, but a pain in the ass for me. I'm so used to rapid fire, then suddenly I get the milk and now I have to do manual override. Argh my fingers

I thought this was a roguelike-inspired action dungeon crawl, when really it's just an action dungeon crawl. "Roguelike" seems to have become a buzzword as of late and it's just used in place of "randomized."
Sloth keeps killing me, help.
Sloth keeps killing me, help.
How? The maggots or his goo bomb? Kill the maggots first before they become a big problem or let Sloth's goo bombs destroy them for you. Then just pelt Sloth with tears. A shadow will show where a goo bomb will land if he shoots one. Don't stand still.
I found a contender for worse pick up. The snake.. makes your attacks go like an S fucking awful imo. Also, I died because I got double Monstro and they were a darker color(like a harder tier of Monstro) Fucking wrecked me when they both jumped in the air and their shot was impossible to dodge.
the maggots are too fast for me!

[editline]3rd October 2011[/editline]
the maggots are too fast for me!
Don't stand near them, those buggers can turn on a dime
the maggots are too fast for me!
The lampreys in the womb are much worse.
thank you friends now i have to find out how to beat Pride
thank you friends now i have to find out how to beat Pride
Pride is super easy. Always stay at either top or bottom as his X attack can't touch you. If he starts throwing active bombs, stay away from them (Remember the order they spawned in case they blow your way). He can't be hurt by his own bombs.
i keep trying to make his bombs blow the door so i can run away
i keep trying to make his bombs blow the door so i can run away
He's so easy though :c
all of the 7 sin bosses are really easy
I found a contender for worse pick up. The snake.. makes your attacks go like an S fucking awful imo. Also all the sins are easy, I can see Sloth being a pain but most of them don't even really attempt to hurt you realistically, only challenge of them is when I had to fight two wraths in a small room. Wow, beat the game with the 5th character and Isaac unlocks his starting item. It's the best in the game and makes it impossible to complain about drops, jeeze.
I had an alt Peep once, damn shit pops both his eyes right on start. Peep, Famine, and Pestilence (if he's the one vomiting exploding green goo) always give me trouble.

I had gotten the nail and battery REALLY early, so I just abused battery charging to get 2 free soul hearts each room. I just wish the damn thing didn't have a 3-room recharge time, I want to abuse it so I can get a PERFECT game. :v:
I still can't beat Ch. 4. Game decides to shaft me with Speedy bosses and no hearts :c
If you find 2 cubes of meat you get super meat boy :)
If you find 2 cubes of meat you get super meat boy :)
That's not super meat boy. For super meat boy you need [sp] three cubes of meat[/sp]
If you find 3 you get a full super meat boy, although he's round. A 4th makes him larger and deal more damage. [editline]fuckyoubionic[/editline] Fuck you and your kind.
