I'm starting to realize that Orks are like a question with no answer.
[editline]4th September 2011[/editline]
I still have parts of a metal Grey Knight.
Why aren't the Grey Knight Terminators metal any more?
[editline]4th September 2011[/editline]
Feral creature you say?
Does that mean that the Orks could actually loot Old One Eye?
Because GW are trying to get rid of metal and replacing it with resin or something similar.
Because GW are trying to get rid of metal and replacing it with resin or something similar.
Well, Finecast Resin for some things, plastic for others, Grey Knights are now a mostly plastic line.
I'm starting to realize that Orks are like a question with no answer.
Let me put it in perspective, one particular Ork, ended up going back in time, so what did he do? He killed his past self just so he could have a spare of his gun that he really liked.
Because GW are trying to get rid of metal and replacing it with resin or something similar.
So they're not only reducing the quality of the material they use on models, they're not even lowering the price of the models that were metal either?
I knew that Orks could loot Carnifexes, but when i think about it, how would it be possible to loot a living organism?
If it was severed from the hive-mind, it would act like a wild animal. Then they just tame it or re-program its mind and have it fight for them.
Using some fully 3d films with good quality looks and animation for comparison:
Final Fantasy The Spirits within budget: $137 million
Toy Story 3 Budge: $200 Million
Ice Age 3 Budget $90 Million
Cars Budget: $120 million
Wall-E Budget: £180 Million
Ultramarines the Movie Budget: $1.5 Million.
See now why the graphics aren't top notch? Hell, the Intro in DoW2 probably cost half or a quarter of UTM's budget. While GW may be able to pony up the money, they'd never make a profit from it.
the problem is the price ofCGI has gone down for the same content over the years. Just compare how much the original lamp animation from disney cost. These people do it as a college assignment. Overall a lot of technologies improved as well.
One would expect that at least the animation and materials would look better than something from the early ninetees.
hell the guys at relic made an animation in their own free time that looks better than the animation in the movie.
And even when you discount the rendering and animation you have to deal with the marines themselves. Who act nothing like the marines depicted in fluff. Those guys are inherently stupid and tend to downplay all the recomendations from the most veteran member of the team as cowardice.
Strong ties =/= Strong understanding.
They're orks, what did you expect.
So i'm guessing they can't loot a defiler, unless they'd just take it apart and have a looted defiler be made by some Mek?

The only thing I'm noticing is the lack of prespective, also pauldrons are supposed to be as long as the first part of the arm (dunno what it's called)
So they're not only reducing the quality of the material they use on models, they're not even lowering the price of the models that were metal either?
Nope. It's kind of annoying if you're like me and trying to get in to the hobby but each time you visit your hobby shop the price has risen by about £5-£10. It might not be so bad if I could paint like one of my mates who's good at painting and could probably sell his models for equivalent or a profit but if you're starting out and want to get better it's pretty damn shitty.
Grey Knights look fucking awesome. It's a shame their models cost so much.
No real point in buying Termies to convert them now.

Sorry that this is off topic but are you like the second oldest member of Facepunch after Garry?
Well, the second oldest that is still active.
If a 40k movie is ever gonna become a hollywood movie, you think who should direct, and who should act in it?
I say Jon Favreau, the CGI he used in Iron man was awesome. Space Marines could definitely look good with that CGI.
But actors, I'm a bit undecided.
Johnny Wiseau.

Blur kicks ass. Here's what they're working on now.

If anyone should direct it/give special effects advice, it would be Neil Blomkamp.
I've just been thinking, in Space Marine there better be a Dreadnought.
Not controllable or anything. Just there.

Jon Favreau makes everything awesome :v:
The voice actors from relic to work on the Space Marine guys that dont take their helmets off, while:
Jason Statham as the main character, in a squad with the other guys.
Gerard Butler as main character's rival, in the same squad but maybe in sequels defects to chaos.
Michael Ironside as the squad leader, a guiding figure to the main character, maybe killed by gerard butler's character when he defects?
Clancy Brown as the devastator of the squad, Good friends with the main character.
Karl Urban as a standard tactical marine, good friends with the main character's rival until he defects.
Zachary Quinto as the inquisitor, attached to the squad later in the film in their big mission thing.
Bruce Campbell driving as a titan driver, with at least one evil dead 3 refrence.
...Did I go too far into this?
I think that like most of the budget for the film went into hiring John Hurt.
So they're not only reducing the quality of the material they use on models, they're not even lowering the price of the models that were metal either?
Quoting two sites
All of the models that have been shown are resin versions of Citadel's lead-free white metal models, but are much lighter and more durable than their metal equivalents, as well as being of a higher level of detail than any other Citadel miniature currently available. However, it has arisen that maybe the quality of these models aren't actually as good as Games Workshop intended. As many people have pointed out, they have many flaws. Usually the models come with defects in them, such as bent weapons, lots of additional flash etc.

What is it?
Citadel Finecast is the brand name for Games Workshop’s new line of resin miniatures. Forge World, a specialty branch of Games Workshop, has been using resin for some time, and other manufacturers have experimented with it. Resin offers several significant improvements over the metal it’s replacing.
The good
Having seen and handled some of the new Finecast miniatures, I can confirm pretty much all the wonderful features of the new models that Games Workshop have have been so kind to point out to everyone:
The details are indeed sharper than metal. I was skeptical, but looking at the models up close you can tell the difference, although how much it matters varies depending on the miniature in question.
The models are lighter, which is very handy for complex models with wings and other bits that break off. No more pinning, and models are less likely to fall over.
Flexible: the models are less likely to break, and you can even bend things like weapons out of the way temporarily to access areas for painting. Weird, but handy.
Easier to glue: as a porous material, resin absorbs super glue more easily and sets faster and stronger.
Easier to paint: like with glue, paint is absorbed more easily into metal.
The bad
Naturally, there are disadvantages to the new models, although naturally Games Workshop is being quiet about such things:
For some reason (moulding process?) the models have significantly more flash and mould lines. However in their defence a lot of the extra flash and mould lines are very easy to remove, because it’s very thin and comes away easily. Many people have reported considerably worse moulding problems than what I saw, though, so it varies. If you buy a Finecast model and it’s abnormally poor quality, remember that you can return it and ask for a replacement.
In the vast majority of cases, the move to resin has increased the price of the models, despite resin being cheaper to produce (see more below). Interestingly, though, some models, such as Wood Elf Treekin, were sold in 1-packs but are now (sensibly, considering unit sizes) sold in 3-packs, and have actually decreased in price (per model). Amusingly, there have been reports of this exact box, the Treekin, being in error and only containing 2 models. Probably a good idea to check your purchases before leaving the store.
Here is one reason why
Why resin? How did this happen?
If you ask any Games Workshop employee, they’ll go on about Finecast being all about making better models. Sure, resin is really nice, and has some definite advantages over metal, but that’s not the reason. It’s about money.
Games Workshop is not a massively profitable company, and hasn’t been going too well over the last five years or so. Some of the recent financial reports (such as the 2008-2009 one) are quite interesting reads and give a bit of an insight into the business decisions in Games Workshop. A key concern has been the highly fluctuating cost of raw metal. The cost of tin (the primary metal in pewter) has nearly tripled in price since 2009. The commodity prices for plastic and resin are considerably less, and much more stable.
There have been rumours on the internet for a while about Games Workshop replacing all their metal with resin, but it was pretty vague and not taken very seriously until recently. One interesting manufacturing quirk was found, however: resin production can use the same moulds as metal miniatures (or refurbished metal moulds), allowing easy conversion to resin.
So overall it is an improvement over using metal for these models.

Except Finecast melts in summer weather and deforms.
Also the higher level of detail is mostly bull, slight, slight detail that is unnoticeable in the painted product. Also miscast terrible on every Finecast I've seen.
I don't meant to sound anti-american, but I feel that If there's gonna to be a 40K movie, please, for the love of Emperor, have a all British cast.
I can see it as a reason if the price of the Metal has risen over three times.

Yeah. A tiny problem with the Space Marine game is that half the orcs are actually orcs and the other half just sound like random people holding their neck.

Dark Crusade (or any of DoW1 games at all) dont seem to start. Like, no response at all.
Hey guy's I had a question about the vehicles for the board game. Are they hollow on the inside so you can stick your miniatures in there or not?
Hey guy's I had a question about the vehicles for the board game. Are they hollow on the inside so you can stick your miniatures in there or not?
Depends on the vehicle, but you aren't supposed to put them in there anyways. It's more of a detail thing (since you can open a door or something and look inside). If units are in a vehicle you kind of just take them to the side of the playing area
