Well, I have a steady source of disposable income at the moment so Step 1 shouldn't be a problem. And I'll probably go with C on Step 2. But then I'd lend them to a friend who actually is a painter and hopefully he could finish them.
Plan your army before you spend lods of dosh on it. As an example with IG, don't buy like 500 dudes before you realize you want to tankrush.

Nothing worse than buying an army wanting to play it a certain way and realising it's just not going to work.
If you're going to play either Marines or Orks, Assault on Black Reach is a pretty good set to start with, especially if you have a friend who wants to buy it and is interested int he opposite army.
The main question of buying tabletop is what are you going to do with it: 1) Play by the official rules 2) Assemble/Paint miniatures 3) Custom everything. Custom assembly of miniatures, rules, et cetera. Usually you can just "Counts As" if you want to play by official rules. First one is rather simple, and yet, researching what you want to do is a way to go for that one. Second one is about simply making various miniatures, painting them, and doing whatever you want with them (Extra points for converting some piece of furniture into a battlefield akin to TinyHammer). Third just means that you take random bits and pieces and convert them into your own stuff. Best done with Orks, of course. You can obviously use outside objects for this.
Tau have no warp soul, therefore they can't be heretics or tainted by chaos. Should have had an Ordo Xenos inquisitor.
Tau would look wierd with hair.
Out of curiosity, why is Marneus Calgar allowed to keep Chaoes relics as his main weapon? And what is up with Azrael weapon, it appears to be a combi-bullpup bolter and plasma gun. The store I go to does not sell Kasrkins but sells Cadians thankfully. Bought a dreadnought and ten Cadians, so I have a ridiculous amount of spare parts. And found out that the dreadnought is ridiculously easy to assemble. Is the Leman Russ equally easy to assemble?
Tank treads can be a bitch, but otherwise they aren't too hard.
Tank treads can be a bitch, but otherwise they aren't too hard.
Yeah, quite fiddly.
Tau have no warp soul, therefore they can't be heretics or tainted by chaos. Should have had an Ordo Xenos inquisitor.
Heresy = Anything that goes against the God emperor of Mankind, so technically, heretics.
Out of curiosity, why is Marneus Calgar allowed to keep Chaoes relics as his main weapon?
Because they were recovered by Roboute Guilliman and presumably cleansed of any taint, either by the fairly newish inquisition, or the Librarians within the Ultramarines. Also, I fucking love the Power fist design ont he cover of Flight of the Eisenstein, but don't really like the regular 40k ones.
Heresy = Anything that goes against the God emperor of Mankind, so technically, heretics. .
I thought heresy only applied to chaos worship.
I thought heresy only applied to chaos worship.
ANYTHING I DISAGREE WITH IS HERESY -WITH LOVE, YOUR GOD EMPEROR
Technically most heretics in 40K should be called Apostates, not Heretics, since Heresy is only really a controversial change in a religious system, though most 40k heretics are guilty of reject (aka Apostasy) Though in 40K i suppose Heresy in their usage would only extend to Humans, i.e Imperial citizens (whether they want to be or not) The entire Imperium is technically Heresy/apostasy (albeit the Emperor wanted to be "worshipped" as a leader and wanted the Imperium to be men of Science and logic.)
I would get into tt if I had lods of emone None of my friends would put so much money into it anyway [editline]12th June 2011[/editline] The game store I go to usually has some people playing 40k I don't feel like playing with total strangers though
Yeah, quite fiddly.
can't be worse than 'hurr 5000 wheels' old hulls
This Tyranid army is going to die so quickly. Swarmlord, 20 Genestealers, 30 Hormagaunts and a Trygon. Should be fun though :v:
My favorite army is IG but they're just so damned expensive Battleforce only has a Sent (used to have a Leman Russ, wtf) You need a ton of infantry ($$$) and vehicle support ($$$$$$) to make a decent army [editline]12th June 2011[/editline] I mean compared to Tau and Eldar Battleforces which have both a walker and a carrier it's a huge rip off
Just buy guardsmen arms and legs. attach them to a super-heavy and say they are sponsons that can engage in melee, as well as catch and throw back missiles, grenades and artillery shells. It's really quite simple. Actually I had a serious question: In Inquisition War, why is Jaq Draco such an asshole to everyone in his retinue?

Framperton, because he's the Inquisitor, he can get away with it.

Actually, how good is Black Reach as a starter set? I might pick it up during the summer. Some of my friends wanted to go into DnD but we never found the time, so they may want to play some 40k. Any inexpensive, decent paints floating around? And what else do I need besides what comes in the box? [editline]12th June 2011[/editline]
The 'walker' in the Tau BF is the HQ unit and the Eldar battleforce is unplayable without additional reinforcements.
Can't you play the Tau BF right out of the box? That's what I heard.
If you're going SM or Orks, fairly good, SM has around 500 points worth of models, albeit not the premium unit types for that price. GW paints are fairly good, except for white, yellow and red, which even with foundation paints are difficult to paint. You need Hobby Knife, Clippers (optional if you use your hobby knife) Glue (I use super glue and not GW's new crappy plastic glue) , Dice (Not enough really in the AOBR) A Codex and brushes, pretty much set then. Tau Battleforce can equal 500 points with fully legal basics, just because you can play right out of the box, doesn't mean it will be great. Fire Warrior Squad, Devilfish, Commander, Stealth Team, Kroot Team, it lacks any real heavy hitting stuff.
The 'walker' in the Tau BF is the HQ unit and the Eldar battleforce is unplayable without additional reinforcements.
Yeah I know, it's the XV8 Bad habit of calling anything with legs a walker And I'm 99% sure some Eldar troops are cheaper than a Chimera [editline]12th June 2011[/editline] I want to get IG, but I don't want to put $150+ into it and have no one to play with
a basic 10 Guardian squad = 90 points or thereabouts.
Still have no clue why they pulled the Leman Russ out of the set
Battleforces now generally have transports, or failing that, light vehicles, not a Main Battle Tank.
You know, I had WH fantasy minis long before I got into 40k, had that starter pack with the imperium and orcs, then bought myself some dark elves, and I painted all of them, but I never got to play any of them because nobody around here plays warhammer. In fact I have to take an hour long trip if I want to buy tabletop stuff. Then I got into 40k, can't remember how, and I bought some Tau, I assembled them, gave them the black painting, and then I was afraid of painting them, because they looked so cool and awesome, and hard to paint, I was afraid of painting them and messing them up. Later on, I bought some SM, and the same happened to me, I even have that Raven guard captain fellow called Kayvaan Shrike, this pimpin' mothefucker Yet I am still afraid of painting them, it never happened to me with the fantasy stuff, but all the 40k minis seem to me so fascinating I'm afraid to fuck them up :( [editline]12th June 2011[/editline] Just looking at him now I noticed he's on a 'COME AT ME BRO' pose
the spess mareens are literally the easiest models to paint in the entire GW range
Battleforces now generally have transports, or failing that, light vehicles, not a Main Battle Tank.
Why not a Chimera though
Tyranid battleforces kinda suck. If I recall correctly its a shit ton of gaunts and a shit ton of raveners. I have 4 warriors, a carnifex, a trygon, a pack of gaunts (6 assembled), and a disassembled zoanthrope (need super glue for this metal bastard, normal plastic glue doesn't cut it apparently). No idea how many points that is.
