And I can't get through DoW2 campaign because all the special effects continuously freeze the game.

Because BC's are relatively brittle and rushing for them means you don't have enough support for them. Which in turn means that your opponent can essentially kill them via soft counters. Not even talking abotu melta storms for instance :)
