Go to your local FLGS and see if you can try out a round. They usually have tables and pre-painted shit.

I'm also terrified when I try to paint I'll make sloppy messes of the Chaos Marines.
I ended up stripping the paint and repainting everything 10x better.

Painting is no problem, buddy.
There are lots of guides to painting certain models on youtube, and it isn't very hard, and if you make a mess, you simply paint over it with a fitting color (I.E) painting gold on black accidentally, just paint black over the gold.

There's a games workshop down in Toronto, I'll check it out later.
I'd so love to start painting on Space Marines but I'm too lazy to glue the parts together in the first place.

There's a good starter set (at least judging from the posts in this thread) that's called [url=http://www.games-workshop.com/gws/catalog/productDetail.jsp?prodId=prod1570027]Assault on Black Reach[/url]
It's a bit expensive, but it includes a 500 point army for Orks and Space Marines (i think), the set also includes a rulebook, templates, Assault on Black Reach novel/book, a 'getting started' book, dice and range rulers.
Basically, it's all you need to start playing, unless you'd like to choose another race to play as.
Battleforces are also p good
But the best thing to do is buy a pack of (insert troop choice of your faction here), some colors, and just assemble those and paint them

I did that, and that worked out fine i suppose.
It's odd that Grey Knights don't have a battleforce, though.

Grenades are easy to avoid as tactical/assault.
Well, only easy to avoid as assault so long as there's not a ceiling right above you/your jump pack is ready.
Though, you can withstand grenades as a devastator if you've got an Iron Halo/Chaos Icon, i think.
I was tempted to play spehss mahreen so I could go angry marine, but I thought "Nah, space marines are a bit boring".
Then I was plauged with "tau or eldar?" For the rest of the day.
I picked tau because they have the best range weapons in the universe.
