I reckon it's some sort of mercenary meeting place, exclusively for hard men. A bit like that bar from that episode of Spongebob, now that I think about it.

I like the art of that one that shows basicallly the exterior of an Imperial Cathedral with the influx of people.
Im fairly new to Warhammer and have played Dawn of War and read a few omnibuses (Space Wolf and Imperial Guard) and something tells me thats the golden throne.
Im probably wrong though.
The golden throne resides inside the Palace of Terra, which is an absolutely huge structure.

I think the environments in Space Marine are what you would expect, not every planet in the galaxy has gigantic gothical structures, especially after being hit by an ork Waagh! It actually had a lot of detail if you took a look around, the manofactorum was massive and the city was boring dull and shitty, just what you would expect from a part of the city where the proletariat lives.
And darker colours? Yes that helps the grimdark but do people really think that in the 40k there's only dark colours? Did the Blood Ravens stole the lighter colours or what? It's just some people that are 'hurr not dark enough until I don't start feeling like im colourblind it won't be 40k'. It artistically helps and defines the atmosphere I'm okay with that, but it sometimes gets to a point where apparently it's heresy.
I don't think I'm getting my point explained right, dunno if you'll get the idea but basically outside from artistical graphical representations not everything has to be like that
This reminds me: I fucking loved the [sp]Chaos invasion[/sp] part in Space Marine. The sky turned sickly purple, darkness befell on the land, and in general, the whole thing was a real "Oh SHIT things are fucked up" experience

Once they figured out how to get in and deal with tomb worlds, it's over. Fluffamuff, at the end of the day it would be Ghazkull with nekron style ultra super orky weapons standing almost a hundred feet tall in a final ultra WAAAAAAGH against an endless number of Nids, while the Swarmlord dictated shit from the background in a galaxy stripped bare (which means Gork and Mork are all that remains of the populated warp)... one of many before it, one of many after it.
