The only reason I like Warhammer 40k is because it's not Warhammer.
I despise that setting. I know Warhammer 40k is just the same thing IN SPAAACE but there have been a fucking million and one games and books and movies and cartoons and comics all that shit for the whole MAGIK fantasy settings.
Warhammer 40k has more character than any of the countless Lord-Of-The-Ring settings have. For example, an Ork in a setting like that. Big, green, really nasty and violent. They're all the same.
40k Ork? They're fucking awesome because they have battlewagons and ridiculously awesome guns and lasers and giant robots and none if it makes any sense but it's still so badass and you can't help but be in awe of it. They'll take the Emperor's Golden Throne, put a steering wheel and some jets on it and use it as a tactical bomber.
Seconding this.
Remember having it, then I lost it and now it seems it's not sold anywhere as digital download (well it's on D2D, but without expansion, and I bet a D2D vanilla won't work with the expansion from somewhere else or retail).
I found it in Target once, but i didn't get to buy it there but later on, i couldn't find the game anywhere.
It's a shame that you can't buy the retail anymore (correct me if i'm mistaken), but maybe the sales for the game weren't going too well.

Damn it, automerge

Warhammer 40k total war is my dream game, why has no one made this

Yeah it's gone from every retail shop too. Can only find a copy of Battlemarch from retail and vanilla on Direct2Drive, but those two won't work togheter so.

You can't really be that stupid can you? 40k Orks are also big, green, nasty and violent.
Necrons are utter bastardisations of the Tomb Kings of Khemri, but without anything interesting to them. The men of Khemri were tricked millenia ago by the great Necromancer and father of Vampires, Nagash. They now rule over a vast kingdom that is all but a shadow of its former self. But for being skeletons, are they stupid terminators? Fuck no. If an explorer reaches there and expresses interest, he'll be taken in and educated. They'll teach this fool about an age past before sending him on his way, or letting him stay if he wants. It's only recently that Matt Ward (in a move that I applaud) has given the Necrons any semblance of a personality outside the Pariahs, and he's cutting back on the C'tan. Thank fuck for that.
I actually read Nemesis (13th book, mind you) for school some year or so ago, just recently bought First Heretic and BFTA.
Horus Rising is the newest addition, gonna buy False Gods and Nemesis (I WANT TO OWN IT) next.
Warhammer Fantasy isn't as unique as WH40k, but it's still the most awesome fantasy setting around.

Why do you speak ill about Lord of the Rings?
To be honest, LotR has lore that of which is matched with Warhammer fantasy/40k, and you can't really compare Orks that are primitive and only have bows and arrows, sword, bombs, etc to Orks that have access to a lot of technology along with Power Klaws and such.

That's not what I meant at all. The 40k Orks are big, green, nasty and violent I never said they weren't. Yeah, but so are most Fantasy Orks. That's just how you describe fantasy orks in a nut-shell. So there was no point to repeat myself.
What I'm saying is 40k Orks are unique because they have some character. Among the concept of 'Orks' in our culture the 40k ones are literally a breed of their own.
It was a misunderstanding. But thanks for rating me dumb.

You like what you like. When I said LotR I was referring to all fantasy settings. LotR is the one that comes to mind though. I dislike that setting. That's my opinion. Doesn't mean it's right.
I'll take guns and tech over swords and magick everyday.
(Ignoring that fact that there is a form of 'magic' in 40k but I couldn't give two shits about that)

I didn't know that the Tomb Kings were kind enough as to not kill explorers who happen to run into them, Warhammer: Age of Reckoning gave me a bad example of the Tomb Kings, because in AoR basically every Tomb Kings skeleton there kills you on sight.
Yeah, it sounds like they are changing the Necrons into proper Tomb King territory.
Hey, any experienced painters, how do you guys go about painting clean white, I just can't seem to get it right.
I've tried building it up over coats of grey, using multiple thin coats, and washes, but it always looks just that little bit patchy, any tips?

They generally won't kill you if you don't run into their territory with a giant loot sack, but express the capacity to learn and intelligence. There's fluff somewhere, where a Nuln scholar lived like a prince amongst the Tomb Kings.
God damn this thread is moving quickly now.
In response to someone asking what it is people do for entertainment in 40k; the Ciaphas Cain books mention the equivalent of a TV series about space fighter pilots (which is apparently really historically inaccurate, mindless fun, possibly also propaganda), also Jurgen is said to have an interest in Pornographic Data Slates. :v:
I like to think they have memes as well.
"Fuckin' magnets, how do they work?"
"The Omnissiah."
Just basecoated my first model in... seven years. Gonna try out a color scheme on it.

What kind of people usually play Chaos? I can't help but have a deep seeded hatred for all things Chaos. Not because it's a bad faction or anything, they're just terrible people who terrible things.

It's not like bad people play as Chaos, it just depends on what faction people like the most.
If anything, i would choose being a heretic over being a loyalist, mainly because the Emperor's an asshole.

Solid coat of astronominican Grey and then lots and lots of thin coats of Skull White, leaving the grey in the recesses.

Well, Nagash isn't really the fathr of Vampires, Neferata is the mother of Vampires, though she used some of Nagash's work to create them, so he's like the grandfather by proxy.

I suppose it's all about perception. I've started putting together a Warriors of Chaos army, but I'm focusing on the heroes and the warriors, so no daemons, and very little besides Knights and Warriors, with them devoted to either Slaanesh, Tzeentch or Undivided, in an attempt to create an equivalent to the Reasonable Marines. I've even gone far enough, to get rid of as many skulls and bones as possible, and any I can't. I paint bronze or gold. Yes Chaos is inherently evil, but it's their acts that define them. My warband for example is evil in the sense that they love reading, drinking, and paying taxes to the gods on time.

I can kind of sterotype it though. I'm pretty sure my one friend would jump on the Chaos train. He seems like that kind of person.
Personally I could never play Chaos because they're essentially worshipers/are pure evil. The Tau on the other hand, they're the lesser evil in the galaxy. The only bad thing is they have a caste system but that's barely any different from the class system the Imperium has only Tau living standards and religious freedoms are pretty high in retrospect to the Imperium.

It'll take a lot of thin coats of skull white over a solid base of Astro, like 6-7, the thinner the better but it also takes more coats.

Tau are alien space pussies.
If the Imperium behaved like the Tau they'd be wiped off the map in a matter of months (and Tau would already have been wiped out, wasn't it that GW makes money off their miniatures).

I'm a pretty patient painter, and with my schemes the white is the most prominent, so I'll be spending a lot of time on it. Also, say I wanted to do writing on, let's say a p[iece of parchment, what tool would be best, I've got a felt tipped pen, a couple of fine detail brushes, and one special brush I've pulled most bristles out of to create an extremely fine tip.
I always thought the Tau were space robots.
