Dark Eldar Look like a bitch to paint
The Imperial Guard are not their stereotype, there is only one army that uses references to the whole meat grinder and Soviet Union army myths and that is one regiment of the Valhallans. I mean there is a catachan sergeant who crushed a Tyranid lictor with his biceps and runs around with a heavy bolter and infiltrated an Eldar HQ camp, killing their leader exarch. Imperial Guard are hardcore and there are literally billions of regiments, you can't label them all the same, should try reading some of the books to get a idea of what they're like.
Also the Lasgun is actually pretty powerful, it can blow off limbs when set to high power.

Wraiths can phase through buildings, so your fucked.
That's how I prefer Wraiths to move. Dark Crusade and other media show them to be entirely disconnected, I like imagining that their spines are infinitely long, but stuck to one place.

So If a wraith can phase through a building or other obstacles, could it also phase into a vehicle and kill the crew inside?

Well the Cadian 8th is a bit of a human wave Regiment, and thousands of Regiments base themselves upon the Cadian 8th. Using human waves is one of the widely accepted strategies of the Guard.

You're talking about Catachans, Catachans, one of the most badass IG regiments in the universe.
Limbs of a Space Marine?
If so, holy shit.

We seriously need a Monty Python-type escapade in 40k.

I read somehwere about a guy that fought a chaos marine guy thingy with an rake axe and came out alive.

Fluff-wise, they could I believe. But not in Tabletop etc.

Sounds like Ciaphas, or was that against a daemon.
Actually it was a Chaos Warlord and his name is Gol Kalea

Jesus, great manners buddy.
It's not an exact source to that quote, which I found in the IG Codex (3rd Edition I think) but fuck it, it works. Read the last paragraph of the linked section.

Source is out dated compared to the many books that actually go against this statement, regiments only number in the few thousand and certainly wouldn't go to this length of grimderp to waste limitless number of bodies, this is just some examples of pure grimderp GW employs in their lore. The only real regiment known to use human wave are Valhallan while the rest seem to actually have some tactical sense about them.
My Imperial Guard codex finally arrived in the mail, time to shop around and put together an army. Anyone have any recommendations for painting/assembly kits?
How important is it to get a codex? Me and my bro (and a couple of buddies) are planning on starting to play wh40k, but we don't want to spend too much money on it.

Pretty important.

Okay source me on all these Regiments that use tactical sense and how the Valhallans are the only Regiment to use human waves.
In The Armour of Contempt one of the characters is attached to a Regiment that acts using mass numbers backed up by armour. There are numerous Regiments mentioned to use that style. But lemme guess, to you they're now contradicted by some obscure novel?
Pretty important.
Even if it's only going to be beerhammer, no competitive play whatsoever?
Even if it's only going to be beerhammer, no competitive play whatsoever?
You still might want to get a feel for the rules of an army. Range, strength etc.
Well, there are numerous foes of mankind that are only defeatable if you literally bury them in Guardsmen. Necrons, for example. They're nigh unstoppable, but even they can't handle millions of guardsmen thrown at them constantly. So whether or not the IG fights tactically or by the numbers depends on the situation and the commander, and also the regiment's homeworld, I'd guess.
Pretty important.
Depends. You could always go the super-cheapo way and only play at GW shops and use the in-store customer open-copies, on top of the dice and measuring tapes. :v:
[SUB][sub]and eventually get yelled at for being a cheap fuck and not allowed to play until you get your own shit[/sub][/SUB]

Did that happen to you? :v:
I wasn't told I wasn't allowed to play, I was just told that I needed to get my own stuff. I had a codex and dice at the time, I now have a codex, dice, and 3ft. measuring tape. No scatter dice, no templates, no rules book. However, I've memorized enough of the rules for my army that I don't need a physical copy. I also don't have any template weapons yet, so....
But one of the guys was getting torn apart because he knew absolutely none of the rules for his army and essentially cheated by not playing by the rules. He's forced to answer three rules about his army each time he plays and if he gets them wrong he's not allowed to play until he can answer another three. :v:

Im pretty sure you can get digital copies off the GW website.

Well, your local GW store is full of assholes.
Also, I noticed that people keep a print out of their forces, which is better than lugging an entire codex.
